Re: “Protesters demand apology from UW leader” [June 5, Northwest]:
The reporters wrote, “Roughly 700,000 Palestinians fled from what is now Israel when Jewish militias attacked the area in 1948.” This is a
flagrant distortion of history. The U.N. voted in 1947 to establish two
states, Israel and Palestine. Israel accepted the plan. In 1948, five
Arab nations attacked Israel with the intention of annihilating the new
Jewish state. Palestinian Arabs were encourage to leave their homes by
the Arab nations with the confidence that Israel would soon be destroyed
and then they could return.
Some Palestinians were indeed forced to leave by Israeli soldiers.
However, had the Arab world accepted the U.N.’s two-state solution,
there would have been no 1948 war, and not a single Palestinian Arab
would have had to leave their home.
