and the thing ought to dry quickly, should I really worry
about this? Anybody had their paint discolored?

i bought one for my jetta and it has only been on for a week, it rained and i didn't take it off > now there is a discolored cloudy appearance where the bra was.
The Volvo/Jaguar dealership I used to work at did not recommend the
mask-style bras. Dirt and sand gets up behind them and will dull the
finish very quickly. For stone chip protection, they recommended the
clear plastic film type. IIRC one brand name was ClearBra
