I saw the race (ESPN - US)and they had a slow motion video of what appeared to be a smallish

the point it separated for the wheel rim and tire assembly? Thanks, Pat
The outer bead broke off the rim allowing the tyre to slip of the rest of the rim.
By 'bead' above I mean the whole outer 'lip' of the rim.

I see a lot of media reporting it as the 'wheel' came off. It's a pet peeve of mine that, at least
according to my experience, American media (and people) often use 'wheel' when they mean tyre and
vice-versa. I've had a few heated discussions with Americans in motorsport fora on the subject and
they usually end up with them saying 'same difference' (which it obviously isn't).
