• I wouldn't bet against an all British podium tomorrow

From Mr Gobrien@21:1/5 to All on Sat Sep 16 10:03:43 2023
I wouldn't bet against an all British podium finish tomorrow at the Singapore GP - after Qualifying the Red Bulls seem nowhere at that circuit and I don't rate the 2 Ferrari drivers in races - so only incidents and Fernando Alonso might prevent it I say.

The last time was the 1968 US Grand Prix apparently (Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, John Surtees). I thought that Damon Hill and Coulthard when at Williams with Johnny Herbert at Benetton had managed it - but apparently not - though 2 out of 3 on the
podium has happened a lot since 1968.

You might have gotten that right, If only Sainz hadn't a driven such an intelligent race. That last 6 laps or so were a masterclass from the
    Spanish driver.

    Unlike the other Spanish driver.

had Sainz did what Rusell did on the very last lap i would've been right - but yes Sainz was very intelligent re the DRS.

Is there some reason to throw in the gratuitous denigration of...

    ...well, ANY driver?

    Brilliant drive by Sainz. Period.

A great pity for Russell, but it looks like something collapsed on his
car... ...or he might have JUST clipped the concrete barrier before the
    corner entry.

    Agreed

I think it was driver error, but under intense pressure. Arguably the team could have relieved that pressure by ordering Hamilton to back off, but
then the ability to perform at their best under pressure is what separates
the great from the merely good.

Alternatively Merc could have ordered Russell to let Hamilton (whose tyres seemed to be in better shape) through. But I rather doubt whether George
    would have obeyed.

Yeah... ...I wrote that before I had a chance to see a better replay...

...and hitting a wall while braking for a corner is almost certainly
    driver error.

I do think he was hoping to make the best possible exit he could from
that corner for one last push to pass Sainz, and racing at the limit
does mean occasionally going a little past the limit.

"Arguably the (Mercedes) team could have relieved that pressure by ordering Hamilton to back off."

I think the opposite - given how few laps were left to go, I've have given Russell just 1 or 1 1/2 laps or so to overtake once he caught Norris (I say that he was allowed far too much time to do it) - Hamilton wasn't with Russell by the time Russell
    caught Norris.

I'd have ordered him to move over for Hamilton otherwise (then ordered Hamilton to move over late on the last lap had he failed to overtake Norris) - Russell just seemed to completely stall once he caught Norris (yes the DRS from Sainz was a factor but I
think Hamilton should've been allowed a go and quickly because of course Sainz still had to be passed too and the laps were running out).

A race win was on and the Constructors position is more important now for Mercedes too (I don't think either driver will finish 2nd in the Drivers' championship)

If more laps left or different title considerations at this point in the season etc then I'd think differently - but for me a race win would been my prime goal as things stood but decisions had to made quickly.

Norris /just/ clipped the wall directly in front of Russell. I think that, as they were so close
together at the time and Russell was unsighted he took his cue from Norris but just took a wee bit
    more of the wall.

It might have been a brilliant play by Norris but I don't think that was the case.

    Cheers,

    Cheers,

Well, one factor that's easily overlooked is that drivers are both
braking and turning, and it would only have taken a very small
misjudgment in just how much brake pressure Russell was using at the
time to cause the car to steer just a fraction less than he planned for.
