I've completely lost the plot. I thought they were to establish the grid for Sunday's GP but they are doing that on Friday now, right?
So are the sprints just like a bonus feature race between qually and the GP?
Don't get me wrong, I think they are good fun, especially to get out the fans, but they don't seem to fit in with the overall drive to reduce costs.
Unless I'm not getting it...

YOu're getting it. Under the initial plan, the Sprint race did serve as
the qualifying race for the GP race. Some of the drivers were unhappy
with the Sprint race concept and proposed a revision. Under the old
system, a driver had to drive as hard as they could and risk their cars
in qualifying for a good position in the Sprint race. They then had to
drive as hard as they could and risk their cars again to get a good
position for the GP. Especially for the midfield and back runners, the
old system was fraught with risk, with limited or no rewards.
Time will tell whether the revised Sprint race format will be
successful. The new format takes some of the pressure off the midfield
teams and back markers, the leading teams will probably press as hard as
they can to do well, in spite of the limited reward.
