• Best Course for First F1?

From Martin Harran@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 24 10:30:59 2021
I have never been to an F1 race. I turned 70 this year and my wife and
kids planned to treat me to one but Covid kiboshed that. Hopefully, I
might be able to do that next year. What race would people recommend, preferably Europe as I'm not fussed on long flights?

Toying with the idea of a combined cruise and F1 as that would appeal
to my wife, lazing on a nice cruise ship whilst I take myself off for
a day to that noisy F1 thing :) That would restrict it to Barcelona or
Monaco; would either of those be a good first (maybe only) F1
    experience?

Not Monaco. Unless you are mega wealthy it's not at all enjoyable. The sort of people who go there are those who want to be able to say they have on farcebook. Barcelona is pretty good. Hungry is good. How would you travel? What class of hotel? Would you
go Paddock Club US$5k+, Gold seat US$1k to US$1.5k or General Admission? Are you interested in a 3-4 day racing experience with partying, etc, or just race viewing? Would you attend all 3-4 days? Do you want a package? You can get good, pretty swish
camping options (walk to track)? Or basic (cheap) camping, it's a great experience both ways.
The best Grand Prix's overall would be 1). Canada. 2). Australia. 3). Mexico. but it depends what you are after, i.e. Britain gets destroyed by the long, long, hours spent in traffic but if you like camping and a party it's quite good (I'm reliably told
as there's no long hours in traffic). Baku is an unusually good one if you want to do some pre/post race sight-seeing.
A lot more info would help me help you. I've been to most races.
BTW, it is always more expensive than folks think in my experience.

Back in the day when I was still making my fortune (pre-injury) I was planning on going to some
races after I'd made it. However now, even if I was offered everything free I don't think I'd
bother. All of the loud DJ and cheerleading shite going on all of the time would, for me at least,
destroy the whole experience. Watching extensive TV coverage suits me better.

I guess I'm getting old. I don't like my racing combined with a nightclub atmosphere. I also
dislike shouty Croft and mute the volume for the first lap or two and after re-starts until I know
there's a good chance Brundle will be able to get a word in. I don't need a ex-radio announcer
telling me what I can see very fast and loudly. I do however appreciate an ex-driver's insight. I
wish there was an option to mute Croft completely. Stating the obvious and cheesy puns interfere
    with my enjoyment.

    Bah!

I went to one modern NBA game, and I had pretty much the same reaction.

I watched my only F1 races when I was quite young (7-10...12, I think
the last one I saw was in 1974, but it's been a long time) at Mosport.

I wish I'd realized how lucky we were when GP racing was a lot simpler.

I am moving house at the moment and am staying with my sister-in-law. She

A lot more info would help me help you. I've been to most races.
BTW, it is always more expensive than folks think in my experience.

If I organise it myself, low cost flight, reasonably decent hotel and
2 day admission ticket. Will start looking at all-in packages over
next few weeks as a possible alternative.

Back in the day when I was still making my fortune (pre-injury) I was
    planning on going to some
races after I'd made it. However now, even if I was offered everything
    free I don't think I'd
bother. All of the loud DJ and cheerleading shite going on all of the
time would, for me at least,
destroy the whole experience. Watching extensive TV coverage suits me better.

I guess I'm getting old. I don't like my racing combined with a nightclub
    atmosphere. I also
dislike shouty Croft and mute the volume for the first lap or two and
    after re-starts until I know
there's a good chance Brundle will be able to get a word in. I don't need
    a ex-radio announcer
telling me what I can see very fast and loudly. I do however appreciate
    an ex-driver's insight. I
wish there was an option to mute Croft completely. Stating the obvious
    and cheesy puns interfere
    with my enjoyment.

    Bah!

I am moving house at the moment and am staying with my sister-in-law. She does not have Sky so I have been forced to watch the replays on Channel
Four. If you think David Croft is “shouty” you should hear the guy who does
the C4 commentary. In fact I dislike the whole C4 setup.

    You have my sympathies.

Azimara at least used to do a cruise including the Monaco race. Not
especially cheap the one that I looked at was about $A12K pp.

I think that most F1 fans, especially those who have been there, would say
that if you could only go to one GP in your life then it should be Spa.

You have to take your chances with the weather though 😉.

Great for hardened fans, especially campers. When I go back it will be at a family type campground. I get a feeling Martin would be more comfortable at somewhere like Austin (COTA). hotel close by, comfortablr Grandstand, etc but a place closer to home,
    perhaps in Europe.
I'm presuming Martin is in the UK, right ?
An out of the box answer might be Holland. Big variety of hotels, nice easy bus/train trip to circuit and good viewing (I'm told). But Hungrary (v.good racing, good viewing, great sightseeing), Baku are possibilities.

What about the other things, sightseeing pre and/or post race, off track events, how mmany days? fly-in Thurs and out Mon? etc ? Yes, No, Not important, etc.
Would you go at dawn and stay all day? Or, leave after qually and forget support races?
Have you looked at the cost of a "reasonably decent hotel" during a GP weekend? Does that phase you?
Do you mind walking long distances?
The two days, and hotel helps a lot. Draws a different picture to the one I had.
Try and give me a feel for what you want.

Spa is on the shortlist though I'm a bit nervous about the weather - I
enjoy watching a wet race on TV but don't fancy it for what is likely
the only FI that I will ever attend.

Thanks everyone else for tips and suggestions; final decision is a few
months away but if it works out, I will do a report here.

And yes, much as I enjoyed camping in my younger years, I like my

No, I went as a member of a team (not an F1 team I hasten to add 😊) but I did walk quite a bit of the circuit and there are some great spots for viewing.

We slept in a large gazebo, which we erected in the paddock, but I agree
that Martin is probably looking for something a bit more sophisticated in
the way of accommodation. Unfortunately I don’t know anything local hotels etc.
