I was one of those Damon fan from a century ago, during that
periode I
hated MS with a passion, but even than I never lost my head and
made
stupid remarks about this guy. I will always ackowledge Schumi's achievements when he was driving brilliantly and always think he
is the
best overal driver around.
What I didn't like and still don't is people making all claims
about
Schumi based on wishful thinking. The basic : Everything good
comes from
Micheal and Everything bad is bad luck or the team.....
It's a couple of years since those old Schumi-Damon days, and the
remarks people made then, have the time to be proved right and
wrong.
Here are some findings.
Schumi handles pressure better than Damon.
True, but Schumi did crack a couple of time after the old days,
showing
us he is only human. Having said that. He is no worse than any
other
driver. Hakkinnen cracked too last year for a few times and let
Irvine
catched him in the WC race. But both of them also showed
incredible
coolness during some other extremely heat moments. Generally
speaking,
they are two of the drivers who can handle those pressure best.
Coulthard used to crack a lot, until his plane crash. (He did very
well
in Hungary, maintaining the pressure on MS, which is not easy.)
All
other drivers either being worse than these three or never been in
a
situation with pressure. Fischella is one of the worst on this
subject,
together with Alesi. That is why they will never be World
Champion. It
takes much more than just being quick. The only one driver that
maybe
better than Micheal and Mika on this issue is, I said maybe,
Villeuve,
he was "been there, done that" for two years. He never cracked
under
pressure once. He did make mistakes though, but that is very
different
than cracking under pressure.
Schumi is the quckest driver around/ever.
Yes and no. He is very, very quick. But speaking of pure speed. I
think
he can be matched by a lot of very good drivers. At this moment I
think
Hakkinen, and in lesser degree, Villeuve and Coulthard, maybe even
his
own brother Ralf, can matched his speed. But in a race situation,
a
driver need much much more than only speed to win the race. ( Look
at
Barichello last race ). Speed also depends on the circuits...
everybody
has their own flavors. But I can't say that anyone who is still in
F1 is
actually QUICKER than Schumi.
Intelligent
I will give this one to Schumi, you do need general intelligent to
be a
World Champion. You don't need to be Einstein, but it certainly
helps.
Schumi must be one of the cleverest F1 driver. EVER. The way he
talks,
and reacts, and handles situations just makes me admire him in a
way. I
think if you get to know all F1 drivers in person, most of them
will be
quite intelligent, don't forget F1 is the pinnacle of auto sport,
involving huge money, you don't get there if you are stupid. Of
course,
there are always exceptions like.....Well let's not name names.
Schumi is one big cheating dog.
He certainly does being catch in the act quite often, doesn't he. Sportmanship is certainly not his strong point. With the most
famous
accidents involving Hill and Villenuve, among others...on the
other
hand, in a sport like F1, it is quite understandable behaviour, I
am
quite sure that a lot of other drivers will do exactly the same
thing as
Schumi in such situations. Only Schumi is a lot more often in the spotlight. Still I don't like it. One with quite a lot of
sportmanship
on the other hand, is Hakkinen, despite what you all said...I have
never
really actually see Hakkinen HIMSELF cheats, (well I think McLaren
does
it quite often, without very strong evidents) And I trust my own observation, which shows me that Hakkinen actually DIDN'T cheat in
a
couple of occasions when he had the chance!! Like forcing a
restart when
he crashed out...(again Schumi did just that last time in
Hockinheim)
Schumi always making great starts:
Through the years, we knows this is not true. Sometimes he does,
sometime he doesn't. He is not bad on this, just not particularly
good
either.
Schumi going through traffic well.
True, he is better than the most drivers. On the other hand. He
has
earned a lot of repect on the track from other drivers, which make
his
life a lot easier also with traffic
Schumi can get 120% out of a ordinary car.
I used to think this is true...until this year. This remark was
made
because Schumi never drove the best car but still manage to win a
lot of
races. This year, unlike a lot of you would like to use this
excuse,
Ferrari's car is at least as good as the Mclaren, I think in the
beginning of this season, not speaking about reliability, just
pure
performance, Ferrari was even better than the McLarens. Ferarri is
still
equal the Mclaren at this moment, the good performance from
McLarens is
mostly due to bad luck of Ferrari and McLaren getting their act
together
during the race. The same can apply to Mclarens in the beginning
of the
season. ( All those unfinishes of Hakkinen!!!) So please don't
give me
that shit about Schumi wins, it's from Schumi, if Schumi loses,
it's the
bad Ferrari or the superb Mclarens.I don't buy that anymore. I
didn't
see Schumi bringing that much more performance out of one of the
best
cars this season. So....
I was with you up until that last paragraph. You saw the race I am
sure.
There was Schumacher driving a good race (did you see any mistakes)
and yet Mika had a 25 second lead. Many claimed that if Dc could
have gotten around him he would have run away also. Plus,
compare RB's performance with Michaels.
McLaren is a better team than Ferrari (witness their pit stops)
and their cars are better. If it was not for mechanical failures
McLaren would be even further ahead. Do you really think that
DC is good enough to challenge MS? Yes, if Dc is in a McLaren
but not if he was also driving a Ferrari.
The fact is that Schumacher has done wonders at and for Ferrari.
How do you think Mika would have done if he had taken MS's place
at Ferrari in 1995? You know it took Mika 96 F-1 starts before he
got a win. Think about that and compare it to MS record. McLaren
has the machines, you saw how Mika with that Mercedes engine
out raced MS to the first corner. It was a great start by Mika but
the extra power of the Mercedes vs the Ferrari put him in front.
I liked your post, but had to make the above points.
Schumi is the rain master
True, very very true. I think this is the most important weapon of
Schumi, the ability to adapt in a new situation very quickly. I
remeber
this year's race in Silverstone??. During the race it began to
rain.
Schumi was lapping, as usual in wet, 2 seconds quicker than the
rest. I
though Hakkine didn't had a good rain setup. But later in the
race,
Hakkinen started matching the time of Schumi in wet, or even a bit quicker.( Schumi was leading a lot so he didn't need to go that
fast
anymore) This shows me that Hakkinen did has a OK setup, he just
need
more time to adapt to the new situation than Schumi. This
incredible
ability is what makes Schumi the best driver overall. As there can
be so
much unpredictablities in a race. Traffic, weather, accidents,
pace
cars.. driving quick only cannot win a lot of races, certainly not
a
championship through the whole year. This ability make Schumi
stands
above all others.
What makes Schumi so good is that he is good in all aspects, well
maybe
not the sportmanship thing , but that doesn't help him win a lot
of
races. No other driver is so allround as Schumi, especially his
ability
to adapt is unmatched by any other. That's why he the best driver
around.
Still I don't like him...
Hahah. Who would have thought that Schumacher would go to win 5 more titles in his career, which looked almost impossible back in 2000 august. When he had just won 2 titles at that point.
Now 21 years later during the pandemic. Its is fun to read these old F1 posts in here.
From early 2000s, which i found amusing and interesting to read:)
