I took them up on their offer of Dorico for $150.

    End of an era.

Have you ever looked at Musescore, especially recently? It's very quite full-featured and is continuously improving. And, of course, free. I'm
curious what more you get for $150.

I remember checking out Finale along time ago, and the interface seemed impenetrable to me at that time. However, I wasn't really used to
notation software then, but after using Musescore for a while, I now
understand the process better and might get along with other notation
programs. But for my fairly limited needs, Musescore ticks off most or
    all the boxes.

    I haven't run it for a number of years. I admit I didn't consider
it, assuming that the project would be lacking in important ways.
    I will have another look.

I do like Dorico, so far. You don't need to switch tools all the time,
so I started entering all music, dynamics, slurs etc. in a linear fashion, whereas with Finale I always did many passes; music on stave 1, then 2...
then dynamics, then slurs etc. Most things are under the fingers.

My wife and I have used Finale since the beginning.
It was pretty terrible at first - obscure and buggy.
David Pogue spent a year rewriting the documentation
years ago - a gret improvement. Gradually, the program
    got more stable too.

Always a bit sad when something like that meets its finale ;- /

I'm glad, now that it happened. I warmed up to Dorico very
quickly. Entering notes with Dorico is closer to taking a
pencil to staff paper. I used to hand-write pieces on staff
paper, then enter them into Finale. I think I can compose
straight into Dorico. Shifting things around as you solidify
the musical ideas is easier than in Finale.
