Last summer around this time corn on the cob was 50c an ear.

I know....still ridiculous but this is Ca.

This year it's been a lot higher and just recently fell below a dollar.
Right now the store is advertising corn at the lowest price this year 75c each.

For you math challenged...that's a 50% increase year over year.

It's not the same quality corn and does not compete in our market
for fresh corn. They do grow sweet corn, but not of the quality

Fresh corn is predominantly eaten in North, Central, and South AMerica.

    https://www.theillinoisfarmgirl.com/the-different-types-of-corn/

"Corn is one of the oldest domesticated crops and has different types and categories.
Scientifically, there are five types of corn: field or dent, sweet, popping, flint, and pod.
Some sources also include flour and waxy corn as types. These types have various
attributes and applications, both edible and otherwise.
Within each type, there are hundreds of variations of hybrids.

It is a diverse grain that is grown for food, feed and fuel. Corn sugar, corn starch
and corn oil comes from field corn. The corn animals eat, squirrels included, is field corn,
and ethanol is made from field corn. We sell to markets that support all of these functions."

Thanks, I know about corn and its varieties. Scott is free to defend his
claim that an ear of corn is more expensive this year. I'm open to other
causes for the price rise such as weather.

    https://seekingalpha.com/article/4616373-corn-etf-ukraine-russia-conflict-drought-impact

The war in Ukraine impacts the worldwide corn market for two significant reasons:

As a combined fifth leading corn producer, any decline in Ukrainian or
Russian supplies pressures other producers to compensate for crop losses.
Corn is the ingredient for ethanol in the U.S., as the ethanol mandate
requires biofuel blending with gasoline. Russia is a leading oil
producer, and higher traditional energy prices put pressure on ethanol
    prices and demand upward.

    End quote.

This year it's been a lot higher and just recently fell below a dollar.

No, there was a price spike due to the Ukraine invasion by Russia.

It's not the same quality corn and does not compete in our market
for fresh corn. They do grow sweet corn, but not of the quality
we see in fresh corn. Their corn ends up being processed and canned.
    But our prices were affected.

No. They were not. Its a different product, and fresh sweet corn has a limited shelf life,
and is not so subject to European prices. Even if it were a European thing.
Europeans generally disdain corn as a side dish.

    Anyway:

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/1030513/us-prices-of-sweet-corn-for-processing-market/

    2021 $89.3/ton
    2022 $123/ton

If Scott wants to claim corn on the cob was cheaper last year, he is
    free to show it.
Europe does not eat much FRESH sweet corn.
    To them, pig food.
Fresh corn is predominantly eaten in North, Central, and South AMerica. >>> Asians eat some fresh corns in select countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, but
those are local varieties unlike American sweet corn.

There's a corn war coming between the US and Mexico over genetically
modified commodity corn and indigenous food corn.

Mexican fresh sweet corn is consumed in the US.

    Interesting but irrelevant sidebar.

No, there was a price spike due to the Ukraine invasion by Russia.

LoL...There isn't any sweet corn on the cob coming here from Ukraine or Russia.

You're just throwing stupid shit out there and hoping some are stupid enough to buy it.

All corn, but it shows the general point.

Which does not at all address Scott's SPECIFIC point in his OP.
Thanks, I know about corn and its varieties. Scott is free to defend his claim that an ear of corn is more expensive this year. I'm open to other causes for the price rise such as weather.

    https://seekingalpha.com/article/4616373-corn-etf-ukraine-russia-conflict-drought-impact

The war in Ukraine impacts the worldwide corn market for two significant reasons:

As a combined fifth leading corn producer, any decline in Ukrainian or Russian supplies pressures other producers to compensate for crop losses. Corn is the ingredient for ethanol in the U.S., as the ethanol mandate requires biofuel blending with gasoline. Russia is a leading oil
producer, and higher traditional energy prices put pressure on ethanol prices and demand upward.

    End quote.

A trickle down effect. I see you have now come around to the trickle don theory. Congartulations.

A huge proportion of US corn goes to ethanol, which is now seen as bad
    for global warming:
