I don't think there's a web interface, so you need to run a client such
as Thunderbird. Client settings are here:

I have tried to bring scientific thinking to literary
criticism, and there's been very little gratitude for this.

    Look in
    news.announce.newgroups or news.groups

for messages with the subject "List of Big Eight Newsgroups"

and that should list all the major newsgroups.

Right, you need a separate newsreader. I remember having some trouble
getting Thunderbird to work, but it works for me now. Unfortunately,
I don't remember where I read the instructions that solved my issues,
but this post may help you:

I use Xnews and have ever since Google trashed Deja News in the
Before Times. Probably will until a future Windows update finally
    breaks it.

If you want a dedicated reader that's a bit more up to date, Pan
would be my recommendation. It has versions for Windows, Linux and
    Mac.

I do recommend following those instructions. One other thing to keep in
mind: If you have completed configuring the settings for Thunderbird,
and you still can only see the newsgroups in the eternal-september.*
    hierarchy, try quitting Thunderbird and re-starting it. That may help;
    it worked for me.

I'm a little surprised that there haven't been more efforts to make web
clients for usenet, as least when it was more of a going concern. At
one time there was a guy who'd made one that looked really good. Last I checked, that was 404.

I was going to recommend XanaNews, but realized it's past the cutoff
date so if DD sees this, then he'll have a newsreader.
