Usenet will continue, it was never part of Google Groups,
there was just a (subpar) Google Groups interface to it. You can
continue to access Usenet with a free subscription from https://www.eternal-september.org/
or a approx $15/year subscription (with more benefits) from news.individual.net
You will need a client, for example thunderbird (free) to go with your subscription.

works great, even if it hasn't had an update in 20 years.

Well, I use trn myself, but I got the feeling that the OP probably
wasn't a Unix/Linux command line guy, so I wanted to suggest
something that would work on Windows.
