What would happen if King Features and Andrews-McMeel agreed on a merger of these 2 big comic strip distributors?

I don't know that I would consider it a "shot". If anything, it
acknowledges the importance of GoComics. I consider it a lot better
platform for comics in many ways than Comics Kingdom.

I'm not sure why the switch was made. Looking at Wikipedia, the strip
is apparently syndicated by King Features but published by Andrews
    McMeel.

The switch was necessary because Washington Post Writers Group
is winding down their comics business and not renewing contracts.
Apparently King wouldn't allow Candorville to remain at GoComics
(Candorville not having the power Shoe did when it switched to King.)

A number of King strips (Mutts, Zits, +) are published by Andrews McMeel
which has a vibrant comic book publishing division unlike King.

    Interesting. Thanks for the detail.
