Have you ever watched "Dead Like Me"? I don't recall now if being a
Reaper was a punishment in that, but it wasn't a bed of roses.

Dead Like Me was 2003-2004. And no, it wasn't a penalty - the
title character was hit and killed by a toilet seat from a space station
that reentered the atmosphere.
There was also “Reaper”, in which the young hero learned that his
parents had sold their first-born child to the Devil, not planning ever
to have one. That’s not legitimately a penalty, perhaps, but it feels
much more like one. I confess I now remember it chiefly as giving Missy Peregrym (“Rookie Blue”, “FBI”) her first major role.
