• Doctor Who S15/S2 - Ep2: Lux

The second episode of the new season gives us "Lux" which
doesn't just break the fourth wall, it blows it to bits!!!

There was a lot in "Lux" to like... I thought Mr Ring-a-Ding
was quite a good villain, despite being a cartoon. He also
turns out to be another one of the Chaos Gods... of which I'm
sure we'll hear more of later on in the season. Mr Ring-a-Ding
was something different for "Doctor Who" anyway, so that was a
plus point. The chemistry between Belinda and the Doctor is
another one, as they come across as a fun pairing. I am actually
preferring Belinda to Ruby at this moment in time, her dynamic
with the Doctor seems to be way more interesting.

Because of the animation in this episode it would be easy to
suggest that without the Disney investment episodes like "Lux"
couldn't have been made, but it is undeniably true that "Doctor
Who" has never looked so good. Visually, episodes are quite
impressive to look at. It's usually the plots or the rushed
endings that let episodes down these days, not what the episodes
    look like.

The middle bit with the "Doctor Who" fans watching the episode
will probably upset some of the more serious types in fandom who
generally don't like how they are portrayed. For me the scene
would have been really cool if it had been three of our RADW
regulars viewing the episode instead though. Imagine if it had
been Daniel70, Dave and Aggy sitting around talking about their
favourite show instead? Okay, an in-joke that only ten people
would have got might be too much to expect, but I think it would
have been fun! Aggy could have coughed "sexual grooming" into
his cup of tea, Dave - in his Tom Baker scarf - could have said
"Retcon the Timeless Child", whilst Daniel70 could have looked
puzzled and asked "is Blink the episode with the trains in the
sky?" - You missed a trick there RTD! :-)

The Mrs Flood cameo was basically there to tell us that she can
also travel in time, as here she was stalking the Doctor in the
1950's. So maybe that's a clue that Mrs Flood is a Time Lord?

Overall the episode, despite being a bit on the weird side, was
actually quite fun. It was almost a historical adventure when
you strip away the 'God of light' stuff. Plus, RTD showed that
he can still be creative in 2025 and he can actually give us
something different when he puts his mind to it. Of course,
being an RTD written episode also means that a lot of plot
detail went AWOL, with a lot of the reasoning behind events
missing. (Probably to all be explained in the season
finale.) However, for me "Lux" was an enjoyable episode to watch
and it is a good step-up from last week's episode. Good but not
    great. I'll give it a 7/10.

Agreed. I think it's the best thing RTD has written for a very long
time. 8 out of 10 for me.

Regarding Mrs Flood, my own theory is that she could turn out to be the
child of River Song, thereby extending the watery names theme to a third generation.

    Rotfl.

I was thinking, why Blink? I don't like Blink. Why do they all three
have to say Blink? My favorite bit in Doctor Who is where he drags the
Earth back home with the TARDIS.

And why does the Doctor only point at things this Doctor has done?

And how does he know what "Blink" refers to?

The Mrs Flood cameo was basically there to tell us that she can
also travel in time, as here she was stalking the Doctor in the
1950's. So maybe that's a clue that Mrs Flood is a Time Lord?

    Or she doesn't age.

My imagined money now is on she's another one of those you call Chaos
gods. Any facts I forgot that go against it? (Apart from dropping her
bags at seeing the TARDIS travel, while not minding the stationary
Police Box. (I forgot whether it was arriving or leaving.))

Overall the episode, despite being a bit on the weird side, was
    actually quite fun.

Weird is not a bad thing. :P

However, for me "Lux" was an enjoyable episode to watch
and it is a good step-up from last week's episode. Good but not
    great. I'll give it a 7/10.

I like last week's episode too. So maybe 8.2/10 if I have to give this

Because of the animation in this episode it would be easy to
suggest that without the Disney investment episodes like "Lux"
couldn't have been made, but it is undeniably true that "Doctor

Overall the episode, despite being a bit on the weird side, was

being an RTD written episode also means that a lot of plot
detail went AWOL, with a lot of the reasoning behind events
missing. (Probably to all be explained in the season

    Time Lord?

    Or she doesn't age.

My imagined money now is on she's another one of those you
call Chaos gods. Any facts I forgot that go against it? (Apart
from dropping her bags at seeing the TARDIS travel, while not
minding the stationary Police Box. (I forgot whether it was
    arriving or leaving.))

She could be one of those too.

Overall the episode, despite being a bit on the weird side,
    was actually quite fun.

Weird is not a bad thing. :P

    On RADW, clearly not! :-)

However, for me "Lux" was an enjoyable episode to watch
and it is a good step-up from last week's episode. Good but
    not great. I'll give it a 7/10.

I like last week's episode too. So maybe 8.2/10 if I have to
give this one a little more. But I think both are fun. :)

    Will add!

was quite a good villain, despite being a cartoon.

Ah!! So "Doctor Who" is, once again, a kiddies program!!

    He also
turns out to be another one of the Chaos Gods

The WHICH Gods?? There IS no God but Jesus!! ;-P

    ... of which I'm
sure we'll hear more of later on in the season.

"her dynamic with the Doctor"?? Her dynamic WHAT??

Well, if we've gone down theb pub, maybe!! Now, which show .... Vera??
.... Midsomer Murders?? Shakespeare and Hathaway??

Okay, an in-joke that only ten people
would have got might be too much to expect, but I think it would
have been fun! Aggy could have coughed "sexual grooming" into
his cup of tea, Dave - in his Tom Baker scarf - could have said
"Retcon the Timeless Child", whilst Daniel70 could have looked
puzzled and asked "is Blink the episode with the trains in the
sky?" - You missed a trick there RTD! :-)

Hey!! What's this?? Pick on Daniel70 week or some shit?? ;-P

The Mrs Flood cameo was basically there to tell us that she can
also travel in time, as here she was stalking the Doctor in the
1950's. So maybe that's a clue that Mrs Flood is a Time Lord?

    Who mentioned "The Rani"??

    O.K.!!

even the recent silly restart from "episode 1" again). Of course, that
is a little misleading since fewer and fewer people are watching
broadcast TV. Plus "ratings" are statistically manipulated guesswork
anyway and don't actually match reality.

Supposedly lots of fans (at least those still watching) liked the
episode, but then many of them must be fools anyway since they claim it
is "unique" ... there have been other live-action shows that have done
simliar animated cross-overs before, as well as fully animated Doctor
    Who episodes and webisodes. :-\

Doctor Who confirms overnight ratings for Lux - lowest in series history
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
The figure fell below 2 million for the first time ever, despite a warm
    reception from fans.

The second episode of Doctor Who's 15th season suffered a fairly
substantial drop in ratings - with just 1.58 million viewers tuning in
to watch Lux on BBC One last night (Saturday 19th April).

That's down from the 2 million who watched last week's season premiere
The Robot Revolution and marks the lowest overnight viewership ratings
in the show's history, the first time ever that the figures have dipped
    below 2 million.

Of course, it's worth noting that these figures don't tell the whole
story, given the figure doesn't take into account anyone who watched the
episode on BBC iPlayer, where it debuted at 8am on Saturday prior to its
    BBC One broadcast.

The consolidated ratings, which include iPlayer, devices and catch-up,
will be released at a later date.

In total, the episode was only the fourth most watched programme on
BBC One on Saturday, behind News at Ten, Casualty and Blankety Blank.

Meanwhile, Britain's Got Talent - its direct competition on ITV1 - also
    received more viewers.

However, it's not all bad news, given that those who did watch the show
appear to have been largely impressed by the episode - and its unique
animated villain Mr Ring-a-Ding (who was voiced by Alan Cumming).

"The artists did such a great job with Mr Ring-a-Ding, he has so many
amazing images," one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding: "Each
    frame is perfect."

Another Whovian wrote: "Have to say, this was one of the most
satisfying resolutions to an episode for a very long time. I can't
    praise Lux enough."

And a third fan went ever further, calling it "hands down the best
episode of the new era" and giving it a rating of 9.5 out of 10.

They continued: "Bonkers concept, stunning visuals, and the Doctor and
Belinda's chemistry continues to be brilliant. This is Doctor Who firing
on all cylinders: wild, clever, and totally unique."

The episode saw the Doctor and Belinda arrive in Miami in 1952, where
they soon find a terrifying secret hiding in an abandoned cinema in the
shape of the aforementioned Mr Ring-a-Ding.

As well as Cumming, there were a few more guest appearances in the
episode, with Linus Roache, Lewis Cornay and another mysterious
appearance for Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood.

It will be followed next week by episode 3, The Well, which takes the
TARDIS to a devastated mining colony on a tough, brutal planet in the
distant future - where these is only one survivor.

Which is why it is best to watch the 7 day figures, which add the
streaming crowd with those who watched on broadcast...and watch the
trends on that number. With that said, there's really no way anyone can rationalize an overnight rating drop of almost 500,000 viewers from
episode one to episode two; that's a huge number (roughly 25% of the
previous weeks viewers) no matter how you slice it.

impressive to look at.

The seven day figures are certainly a more appropriate way of
gauging public opinion of TV shows in 2025... I know a good few
people in the UK who record "Doctor Who" on their Sky box to
watch at a later date, as well as some who use the iPlayer to do
the same. So time-shifted viewing is certainly more of a thing
these days now that you don't have to be in front of the TV
watching BBC1 at 7pm on a Saturday evening if you want to watch
    "Doctor Who".

HOWEVER, whatever figures are used I think it's plain to see
that "Doctor Who" viewing is on a downward trend. The show does
seem to be dying on its feet, and no amount of positivity from
any of us can change that. People are just not watching it.
    Including my own son!

Doctor Who ended in 2017. The Doctor was still alive suspended in time

They don't matter per se, but they do give an indication of
    general viewing trends.

Supposedly lots of fans (at least those still watching) liked
the episode, but then many of them must be fools anyway since
they claim it is "unique" ... there have been other
live-action shows that have done simliar animated cross-overs
before, as well as fully animated Doctor Who episodes and
    webisodes. :-\

I would imagine they mean "unique" for Doctor Who... as a
cartoon villain that comes out of the TV screen to interact with
people isn't usual fare for "Doctor Who" villains!

The Doctor coming out of the TV screen to interact with fans
watching the episode isn't usual either!!!

I found the episode ("Lux") quite entertaining anyway, nobody
else in my house would watch it though. They pottered around
    doing other things...

I might just watch "Doctor Who" on the iPlayer or Disney+ next
Saturday during the day as the sitting room is empty once
"Doctor Who" begins now... so much for trying to do "Doctor Who"
old school with the family for this season!

There won't be a new showrunner. The series is completely
    dead.

On the face of it, it certainly looks like the show is dying.

It died the moment Davies turned the Doctor gay and used
the show to sexually groom and indoctrinate children and
lecture 4 and 5 yearolds about being involuntarily celibate.

Nope, that's still not the message that I am picking up from the
    show...

Maybe I'll have to try concentrating harder when I watch the
    next episode?

Why are they turning all the characters gay when 97% of the audience is completely heterosexual? Why do they think heterosexual would be
interested on being lectured to about how great homosexuality is?

There's only one explanation and that is that these disgusting sick
perverts want to sexually groom children. There is no doubt about it.

OTOH if it’s like 1989 again, there won’t be a formal cancellation; they’ll just not be renewing it at all. Your score could be stuck in
    limbo for years.

Let’s split the difference and call it -8/10 for now.

    Problem solved.

Quantum Mechanics doesn't work like that. The probabilities for each
state are not necessarily equal and the word quantum means that there
are no states in-between. What there is is entanglement. We shall find
out at the end of this series, though what that means who knows. Does
the end mean the Sea Devils defilement? Yes, base a spin-off on the
lowest rating episode of all time until Gatwa came along and broke the
    record repeatedly in consecutive episodes.

Plus "ratings" are statistically manipulated guesswork
anyway and don't actually match reality.

Which is why it is best to watch the 7 day figures, which add
the streaming crowd with those who watched on broadcast...and
watch the trends on that number. With that said, there's
really no way anyone can rationalize an overnight rating drop
    of almost 500,000 viewers from episode one to episode two;
that's a huge number (roughly 25% of the previous weeks
viewers) no matter how you slice it.

WEll no one seems to be engaged.

It was never a simple 0/10 rating. It's was always in a state of
superposition between -16/10 and 0/10 until the series is either
cancelled or renewed as it predicted with the use of the hashtag
    #RIPDoctorWho.

    OTOH if it’s like 1989 again, there won’t be a formal cancellation;
they’ll just not be renewing it at all.

    And gross writing.

There won't be a new showrunner. The series is completely

On the face of it, it certainly looks like the show is dying.

It died the moment Davies turned the Doctor gay and used

Will we find out? Don’t forget, DW wasn’t officially cancelled in
1989. The BBC kept insisting it was just suspended or postponed. There
were plans for specials like The Dark Dimension that very nearly got
    made.

We could be waiting years for your final rating.

Luckily all that quantum business doesn’t have much effect on the >macroscopic world. We can use -8/10 as a rough estimate for
now, and revise it to a final figure when the time comes.

(Damn it! You’re making me look sensible again, and it really
    doesn’t suit me!)

I don’t think the Sea Devils themselves are to blame for the low
    ratings.

just confuse Dave otherwise... and what will happen when
he runs out of fingers and toes?

I prefer for my score to be in a state of superposition.
Maybe there are more than just two states. Yads should

Only on RADW can a simple 0/10 rating not be a simple 0/10
    rating!

It was never a simple 0/10 rating. It's was always in a state
of superposition between -16/10 and 0/10 until the series is
either cancelled or renewed as it predicted with the use of
    the hashtag #RIPDoctorWho.

To give a rating of -16/10 means you don't understand how the
    ten-point rating system works!

Breaking News: Zero is the lowest you can go!

Using terms like quantum entanglement and big words like
superposition might confuse simple people, like Dave, but it
doesn't take away from the fact you are trying to obsfucate
matters by giving an invalid rating...

TLDR: Aggy is full of shit...as per usual

There won't be a new showrunner. The series is completely
    dead.

On the face of it, it certainly looks like the show is dying.

It died the moment Davies turned the Doctor gay and used
the show to sexually groom and indoctrinate children and
lecture 4 and 5 yearolds about being involuntarily celibate.

Nope, that's still not the message that I am picking up from the

Go to the A & P, buy your own tin foil, and make your own!

"A & P"?? Is that some sort of Grocery store Chain??

Yes...A & P is short for "Atlantic & Pacific".  Not very many of them

sense than them having been in U.K. ;-P

I do not recall seeing these anywhere in NA.
