But I thought it was in the toilet? All the YouTube "Prophets" and
their followers have declared it dead in the water.
Could they be "gasp" wrong?

Re-read the press release. It says Doctor Who was a top 5 series...on
Disney +...every week it aired. When ratings were discussed by
everyone, they were looking at the viewing figures for all shows from
all streaming services. While Doctor Who was being aired, no D+ show
was even in the Top 10 viewed shows overall, let alone top 5. The way
they wrote that sentence is slanted in their favor.
Remember, a press release is going to put the best possible spin on
things they company can. The show might have been top 5 just on D+,
and that's it. Otherwise, if the show was top 5 overall, Disney
wouldn't be so indecisive about paying for a third (or more) season.

One news report said that popularity amoung current subscribers is less >important than the ability for the show to bring in *new* subscribers.
If Doctor Who (or any other show) has reach it's peak 'pullability'
then there may be no desire for Disney to continue paying out for it.
Of course, as with most thing to do with subscription systems, that's
simply garbage. There is always a limit to how many people will want to >subscribe, no matter how great any new content supposedly is. Any
company that relies on continual growth of their customer numbers
shouldn't really be in business to begin with because it is a flawed
business model and will ultimately fail - it's basically the same idea
as an illegal pyramid scheme scam.

I don't know how accurate those streaming league tables produced
by online sites ranking viewings are as I don't think the big
streaming companies release their viewing figures officially...
unless they are using it to promote their 'hit shows and give
themselves a pat on the back obviously.
But generally, going by what they say, Disney+ has less
subscribers than Netflix so it should - in theory - take a lot
of viewings for a popular Disney+ show to top a popular Netflix
show, or whatever. I assume "The Mandalorian" might have done so
when it was first released, as that was very popular, but I'd be
surprised if "Doctor Who" did that often. I don't know though,
it is only an assumption. If it was a quiet week on Netflix with
nothing major 'out', who knows, maybe it did. From the press
release it sounds positive anyway, but then again, that's what
press releases are for. So we are none the wiser at the end of
the day. The proof of the pudding will be if Disney order more
episodes of "Doctor Who" from the BBC. If they do, then they
must be happy with the viewers that the show got for them.
Remember, a press release is going to put the best possible

Yes, Disney are only talking about Disney+, not the USA (or
whatever territory) as a whole. So it means top five on their
service that week, which is basically what it says. Disney
wouldn't have access to the weekly viewing data from Netflix,
Prime, Hulu, Paramount+, HBO Max, Peacock, Apple TV+ (etc.) as
these companies are not going to share data with their rivals.

Yes Dave, all press releases are spin to some degree. If NotKnow
issued a press releases about its services it would be spin too.
That's what press releases are for... a bit of positivity in
whatever information they are supplying.
It doesn't mean they are outright lies though!
