• WEST SIDE STORY (no spoilers)

From moviePig@21:1/5 to All on Sun Apr 17 10:49:12 2022
What's impressive about the new Steven Spielberg rendition of WEST SIDE
STORY is that there's still today a pool of talent capable of creditably performing their own vocals and dance moves (as well as looking good).
Of course, this material (thankfully barely "updated") is iconic beyond commentary. Still, the upside of such universally well-known moments
and tunes is that there's not a dud in the bunch. Recommended.

I lasted 20 minutes. Nice to see Rita Moreno again but it was all surface. I may go back to see the America scene. Or maybe not.

She was exec producer. Meanwhile, I do find Spielberg soothing...

Exec producer? What does that even mean?

Here, I think it means they wanted her in the movie.

No spoilers? It's Pyramus and Thisbe from Metamorphoses from two
    millenia ago.

Is it safe to say it was automatically deemed a "classic" because of
    Spielberg?

Are you new to films? It means she wrote a check.

No, because of Robert Wise (and Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim).

That's not the movie being talked about so I don't know what you're
    talking about.

But that's the movie, if any, that will be called the classic WSS.

IMDb goes so far as to name Shakespeare as an (uncredited) writer on the
'61 film, but strangely not on this one.
