    A middle-aged man, riddled with childhood fear and guilt, endures the
    most excruciating day of his life. BEAU IS AFRAID, from writer-director
    Ari Aster, is an acute seriocomic -- and undoubtedly personal --
    portrayal of a tortured psyche. Whether its topic and narrative are
    enough reward for its 3-hour runtime (and how its release at that length
    got greenlit) is a puzzle. Because my DVD crapped out for the middle
    third of it (a mixed blessing) no recommendation is offered.

    Nice setup. The story could go anywhere. And where does it go? Mommy, therapy and allegory. Yikes, I hate allegory.

    (Not thrilled with Mommy and therapy, either.) I probably liked every 15-minute chunk of this flick, but I'm mystified how it ever seemed
    promising as a potential commercial success. I can only imagine that
    Aster himself had visions of joining Fellini. Art for art's sake...
