  • War of the Worlds. 2005. As bad as when I saw it in the theatre

    It really was second-rate compared to the original. Letting Tim Robbins once more go on a rampage against anything right-wing was part of why it stunk. That, and having an intelligent kid like Cruise's daughter constantly screeching.
    There were other problems,but the TV show, "Invasion" currently running is a much better attempt at the idea.

    *Everything* with Tom Cruise in is horribly bad ... he can't act for
    toffee and he's a weirdo with a massively over-bloated ego.

    That last part is a description of actors in general, I think.

    Many shows have done it better (at least to begin with, many American
    shows seem to lose the plot after a season or two and then go silly):
    "Falling Skies", "V" (the original one, not the idiotic reboot), "War
    of the Worlds" (French-English joint series), etc. Even "Earth Final
    Conflict" was better than Cruise's awfulness.

    The problem with the Cruise movie was it was wholly-derivative and lacked much real suspense.
    There is a difference between an action film and a terror thriller, Spielberg was off his game.
    But he sure was "on the game" when he agreed to make it.
