• THE WHALE (no spoilers)

From moviePig@21:1/5 to All on Sat Mar 25 19:06:35 2023
A morbidly obese man must confront his relationships and his life.
Adapted from the stage play, THE WHALE shows the remarkable strides in
fat-suit technology (even though Brendan Fraser has put on actual
weight). For me, unfortunately the serious drama never overcame the
side-show. Oscars for Fraser and his makeup. Somewhat recommended.

I passed and haven't regretted it.

Wish I'd liked it more, as lots of talent and effort went into it. Hard
to craft an outstanding flick around a polarizing disability.

You mean even from Austin Powers' Fat Bastard? lol

They could've been shooting for another My Left Foot.

Believe it or not, I think they were shooting for another BLACK SWAN.

I have been fighting my weight all my life. I suspect that if I saw it,
I would have nightmares for the rest of my life.

Like Oscar Wilde, I can resist everything but temptation...

I can't speak for the chronically overweight, but I can't imagine that
this flick holds many revelations for them ...which seems a shortcoming
for a movie that's plainly, unambiguously about being fat.

The opposite is "The Machinist" where Christain Bale starved himself
for several months to get down to about 135 pounds. I thought about
trying that but it would be a clear violation of my life time contract
    with Guinness!

Fwiw, I don't think Fraser's actual weight gain was role-related. What
you see onscreen looks to be 99% fat-suit.

Could be but I saw him in an interview after the film was released and
he looked pretty over weight and out of shape. But who knows, maybe
he was secretly wear in a "fat suit".
