Friend went to a large theatre on Sunday night to see Avatar. Said there was five people in the room. Does not bode well. Though some movies have made decent money (Top Gun, for example) mega-movies that cost hundreds of millions may now be a
crapshoot.
Otoh, there's a reason Jan. and Feb. are called "dump months".
Well, I can't remember the last time I went to a movie theater - I'd really rather wait a bit
and just watch it at home. Stop, pause and rewind without sitting with a bunch of strangers
or worrying about Covid. But for a lot of people I think it's about the money. Example; a friend
and his wife were taking a group of six kids (not all theirs) to see some animated kids show.
The kid's tickets were $10 each and the adult tickets were $16 each. So you've got $92 in tickets.
Then figure at least $10 a kid for a drink and a snack from the concession stand, so that's another $60.
That's $152 for the trip. Not to mention the gas, parking and the general hassle. So, they checked
and found they could stream the same movie for $20 and the rental was good for two days.
And the drinks and snacks are a lot cheaper at home. No brainer for them - they streamed it.
