It becomes ridiculous when they gender and/or race swap an existing
character simply to appease the Politically Correct whiners. Examples
would be the female Thor, the female and now black Doctor Who, etc.
Jane Foster (created by Stan Lee) first appeared in Thor comics in 1962
as the love interest of Dr. Donald Blake, the secret identity of the
Norse god superhero Thor. In 2014 (written by Jason Aaron) she becomes
Thor after the classic hero is no longer able to wield Mjolnir.
Jason Aaron: This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This
is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel
Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.

I'd also like to point out the regeneration of Gallifreyan Time Lords
was established fairly early in the series to potentially include
non-human forms, and gender was shown to be malleable in how The
Doctor's nemesis The Master regenerated as female (also 2014).
The skin tone is after all a pretty minor thing here.

The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is
itself a political attitude.
-- George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair, 1903-1950):
Why I Write, 1946
Comics and TV series have always been political. The question you’re
perhaps asking is "since when did they become so lazy about it?"
