Matt Reeves to produce English-language remake
of sci-fi feature Sputnik
----------------------------------------------
Matt Reeves' (The Batman) 6th & Idaho production company is
teaming up with Village Roadshow Pictures (The Matrix, Joker)
along with XYZ Films (Mandy) to develop an English-language
remake of the 2020 Russian sci-fi horror Sputnik, according
to Deadline. The remake is currently in development and will
be produced by Matt Reeves, Adam Kassan, and Rafi Chrohn for
6th & Idaho; Mikhail Vrubel and Alexander Andryushenko for
Vodorod Pictures; Art Pictures' Fedor Bondarchuk; and Hype
Film's Ilya Stewart.
The Russian version is well-made and does a good job.
It was, however, a bit too Soviet for my taste.
Perhaps because, never having lived in the Soviet Union, I missed some
of the referential nuances and stuff.
In this case, the English version might be "better" -- in the sense of
being less Soviet. Or, rather, using a Western version of what the
Soviet Union was like, rather than a realistic one.
Among anime fans, this is referred to as "localization," the process of making the foreign a bit less foreign.
This may involve cutting out bits of animation, or changing what a food or animal is called something else that looks similar but is more familiar, up to changing the opinion or attitude of a character to something more palatable.
The process can go to various extremes, and attitudes to it also go to various extremes.
