Personally, I have a gun safe but that's only for when I'm not at home and not
carrying it with me. When I'm at home, the gun isn't in the safe and the ammo >>is in a magazine inserted into the grip, with one in the chamber ready to go. >>To hell with Gavin's orders to the contrary.
An unloaded gun is a useless paperweight.
My father kept his hunting rifle in the closet (I assume unloaded but
never asked) 20+ years after he went hunting for the last time.
My dad had his guns next to his bed, loaded. I would sometimes take
the .22 out for shooting as a kid. He also had a rat killer pistol but
I never bothered with that. Also a 12 gauge shotgun which I also shot
a few times on my own. Think my brother (younger) did the same. Not
sure that my sisters(also younger) ever touched the guns.
Living so far out in the country that our nearest neighbor was a mile
away made it easy to go outside and do some target shooting without
too much concern.
I didn't learn until after I was married that my wife had done target >shooting before I met her and that her pistol was still at her
parents' place...
