Peacock dropped a new series called Long Bright River a couple of days
back. I'm not sure yet if this is meant to be an ongoing series or a
limited one. In any case, they dropped all 8 episodes at once and each
is just under an hour long.
Our lead character Michaela "Mickey" Fitzpatrick is played by Amanda
Seyfried who I first saw playing Lily Caine in Veronica Mars back in the
day. I know she's done a lot of other things since then but I haven't
seen most of them. Mickey Fitzpatrick is a patrol officer in the inner
city of Philadelphia, where she grew up. She takes a special interest in
the homeless people in the area, at least partly because her younger
sister is one of them. She's also got a young son whose father is rarely
around for reasons that are revealed as we get into the series.
Several teenage girls have been found dead in the area and the initial assumption is that they had overdosed but Mickey discovers that one of
them had blood in her mouth which is apparently unusual in overdose
cases and suggests homicide. The medical examiner determines that it was
indeed a homicide - via insulin - and that two other recent deaths, also thought to be overdoses were also murders by insulin.
Mickey is not very much appreciated by her fellow police, including her supervisor, so she investigates largely on her own, with the help of her
former partner, Truman, who is off work recovering from an injury she
feels partly responsible for. But he's basically the only guy she feels
she can trust.
As the investigation continues, we learn a lot about Mickey and her
sister Kacey and why their relationship is so troubled. We also learn
that Mickey was a skilled musician (English horn) who gave up pursuing
her musical dream.
Having finished the first 5 of the 8 episodes, I thought I'd mention it
here in case you were curious about it. IMDB gives it a 6.9 rating,
which I suppose is fair. It's not brilliant but I'm finding it watchable.
