• What Did You Watch? 2025-03-07 (Friday)

    From Ian J. Ball@21:1/5 to All on Sat Mar 8 09:33:27 2025
On Friday, I had to give exams to 3 classes, so that took most of the day.

Despite that, I decided to finish off season #1 of "Paradise" yesterday,
and then did yesterday night's LMN flick, plus I did soaps:

    soaps: Both Thur's ep's.
GH - NuNuLulu goes to Carly for advice (is she DAFT, or
something?!?!!), and despite Lulu wanting to tell Dante the truth (very
clearly Lulu's purpose would actually be to take Brook Lynn down!!),
Carly points out the parallels to both Bobby's and Carly's earlier
pregnancy situations, which seems to get Lulu to mostly back off, though
Lulu says she'll know what to do when she sees Dante. More Quartermaine
drama with Gio. [roll] Portia consults Ric about what to do about Drew's blackmail, and he tells her to string Drew along until he figures out
what to do. Isaiah wants Willow to be an ER nurse (uh... can Willow be
trusted in a crisis?! I think not!).
DOOL - This was mostly Joy Wesley and Rafe drama - Stephanie resists
the urge to tell Alex that Joy might be pregnant, while Joy seems to be
telling everyone she can get her hands on about it, including JJ and the stripper from FauxRafe's bachelor party!... Meanwhile, in a dumb
development, Rafe suddenly remembers everything, except what happened
after he surprised Arnold Feniger and was knocked out. Jada runs his fingerprints (really?! no one did this before?!!) and confirms it's
Rafe, and is elated. NuGabi goes to EJ demanding to know where Rafe is,
and she then pulls a gun on EJ (man, I was hoping the bitch would just
shoot him!!), but JJ stops Gabi at the last second by telling her that
they've found Rafe. Oh, and that DiMera stooge lady tells EJ that she
had to find a "permanent solution" for the Arnold Feniger problem, but
never explains what she means by that!

    Paradise (Hulu) - Ep's #1.7 & 1.8, the last two ep's of "Paradise"
    season #1.
I can't help but admit that I was disappointed by a significant
    portion of these.
While ep. #1.7 was taut, I didn't buy its central conceit - that a
massive natural disaster would inevitably lead to Total Global
Thermonuclear War(tm!) (didn't they retire this chestnut with
"WarGames"?! ;p ) - to say that would be counterproductive to all
involved is an understatement. (I also didn't buy that Russia would take
on China - in present circumstances, that would be nigh on impossible!)
So I didn't buy a lot of what happened in this ep. They also keep taking
about the 300-ft tsunami wave, when it was clearly more like a 500-ft
tall tsunami wave, which the "experts" would have figured out pretty
damn quickly. And what was the random nuke that Collins saw from the
plane?! 'Cos it sure as heck wasn't Denver! And I also didn't buy that
the U.S. and Bradford have a massive "Off" Button that could stop Total
Global Thermonuclear War(tm!) dead in its tracks... And then finally, we
get the unwelcome reveal that You-Know-Who is still alive.
Ep. #1.8 continues with the massive disappointment going back to ep.
#1.6 - and that's Collins not just shooting Sinatra (whom these episodes
do confirm, is indeed a monster!) right between the eyes. And, of
course, he "jumps" for Sinatra as soon as she claims she is holding
Collins' daughter (I don't even remember Collins verifying this fact!).
This leads to the reveal of Bradford's killer - the good news is that at
least it ties into earlier events. The bad news is that the killer's
motive doesn't even make sense (shouldn't the killer have rightly wanted
to take out Sinatra?!). I also dislike the dropped character of the
"city designer" dude - is he not in Paradise with the rest of them?! If
not, why not?!... I did like Jane turning on Sinatra; I didn't like that
Jane just seems to be a garden-variety psycho - I was really hoping
there would be a reveal where Jane was some kind of criminal mastermind.
And are we going to finally get some background on the Jane character in
season #2? Where the Hell did Jane come from?!... In the end, the finale
does wrap up the show's main storyline, but puts Sinatra on indefinite
ice (I guess Jane is such an amazing shot that she can bring you right
up to the brink of death without taking you over!!) and sends Collins "outside". And this was another dumb sequence - I thought it was volcanic/nuclear winter outside, with the sun blotted out for years(?)/decades(?), and yet Collins literally "flies off into the
    sunset"?!! Bah.

Deadly Girls Trip (LMN) - I recorded this, but it wasn't getting my full attention, to the point that I literally had to rewind more than once
just to see what I had missed while I wasn't paying attention!!
This was pretty silly - four 40-ish gals head out for a weekend(?)
away, when one of them (Kate Dickey, who in the past has played villains
as often as not!) ends up dead. This makes the main one (recent Lifetime
staple Kristi Murdock, who has probably starred in more Lifetime flicks
lately than even Brianna Cohen!) suspicious, which makes her start investigating, which pisses off her other two friends (Charlotte
Hemmings, and Lesa Wilson who is way taller than I thought she was!),
who of course are complicit in the death somehow.
But there's way more going on here than just that - Murdock's
character is convinced her husband (Alex Trumble, disappointingly not
playing a villain in a Lifetime flick this time!) is about to cheat on
her (if he hasn't already!), and one of the other ones (Hemmings) is
    fleeing an abusive husband.
Pretty much all of these storylines end up predictably converging. Meh.

    What did you watch?

    I watched:

Matlock - "Pregame" and "Game Day" - I caught up with the last two
episodes. And apparently Matlock figured out who the bad guy is.

Django Unchained (blu-ray) 2012 movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Jamie Foxx stars as a slave in 1885 who is freed by a bounty
hunter played by Christoph Waltz. Waltz needs Foxx's help to track some fugitives. Foxx helps and in return Waltz agrees to help Foxx free his
wife (Kerry Washington) from her evil slave owner played by Leonardo
DiCaprio. But first they have to also get past DiCaprio's loyal slave
(and the one whose really pulling the strings) played by Samuel L.
Jackson, who chews every scene he's in.

    What did you watch?

Saving the rest of your report until I watch the rest of paradise if I
    decide to.

I caught up on a bunch of old passwords and deleted a lot unwatched,
    depending on the guest.

I found that the DVR had not in fact recorded any episodes of NCIS, but was
for some reason pulling the oldest few starting with the Halloween episode
from on demand. Unfortunately, CBS on demand is so horribly crippled it’s
    not worth watching them.

I watched a tracker I hadn’t seen with an evil cupcake mother.

I watched the first two episodes of daredevil born again. I don’t get the glowing praise for this.

I watched episode nine of DOCTOR ODYSSEY, which turned out to be the first
of two parts called “shark attack“ which is the stupidest episode of this show yet and that’s saying something. Adrian paki guest stars as a
    mysterious woman Dr.
The ship is attacked by a pod of orcas that were trying to get a great
white so they could separate out its liver and eat it (I swear they said
that) and the great white committed Sepuku by throwing itself into the Odyssey’s propeller completely crippling the ship, and knocking out their communications because wait What the fuck?

Now with numerous injured by shark people dying horribly, and them chopping their limbs off to save them the orcas are apparently trying to sync the
    whole kit and caboodle.

To be continued next week, same shark time same shark channel!

    Hulu (with ads).

Ads not with standing it’s an amazingly incompetently programmed streamer.

It will routinely auto play a different show rather than the next episode
of the show you were watching. And if it does show you another episode of
the same show it will just as often go backwards as forward.

If you leave it on pause for more than five minutes (in fairness, the five minute limitation is built into the 4K Firestick max, and you can’t get around it) it goes to screensaver and here’s what you have to do to resume playing:

    Press the back button.
That brings up some unwanted menu options so you have to press the back
    button again
Keep doing that until it finally takes you back to Hulu
Hulu will launch the profile page and you will have to choose who’s
    watching
Hulu will then take you to a welcome page and then auto go to home
which has no useful options like resume.
Tab left to get to the side menu
Tab up to get to search
Select search and tab right through the keyboard because you can’t get
    around it.
The seventh click takes you to the column for “trending searchs“ in this case trying to get me to watch the rookie
tab up to select trending searches.
Tab right to select recent searches.
Tab down and hopefully get to show you were just watching.
    Click on that show.
Click on that show again to go to the show.
Click down to go to episodes.
Click down again to actually get into the episodes
click up or down to get to the episode you were watching
Finally the one thing it does right is if you can find the episode you were watching it remembers and lets you resume.

Repeat the above process every time you get up and go to the kitchen to get
    a drink

I watched the first two episodes of daredevil born again. I don’t get the

    I’m losing ground though.

Yesterday I took one step out the front door to enjoy the rain and
instantly, INSTANTLY, there was a door-to-door salesman trying to sell me replacement windows. At dusk. In the fucking rain. After a full day of screaming obscenities at telemarketing scammers.

If you leave it on pause for more than five minutes (in fairness, the five minute limitation is built into the 4K Firestick max, and you can’t get around it) it goes to screensaver and here’s what you have to do to resume playing:

I'm enraged by the streamers that have discovered that using Pause is yet another opportunity to throw ads in my face. When I was back in Texas for Christmas, Dad's DirecTV service did this and now I've noticed the Paramounts are doing it, too. Within about five seconds of hitting pause, an ad starts running on the DirecTV. With the Paramounts, it's only static images, like movie posters for other films on the Paramounts.

When I hit pause, about 50% of the time it's because I want to stop and read something on screen. Like a character holding a letter or the screen on the president's super-secret iPad on PARADISE. These ads make that impossible and since I'm paying for the ad-fucking-free tier, I'd say they're also some type of fraud.

That infuriates me too. They constantly expect you to be able to read somebody’s iPhone that’s at a 45° angle and when you push pause, it makes it really illegible.

Sadly, it was behind me in the house. I was still tethered to it, but had
just literally taken one step outside. I was made really really aware of
    how vulnerable I was.
