As citizens of πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ a free, democratic country, we have to be careful
when visiting parts of the world run by authoritarian regimes.
Everyday things we take for granted can be frowned upon by those who
subscribe to certain restrictive ideologies. So far, eight New
Zealanders have been detained while trying to enter πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Dumbfuckistan
in the last six months <https://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/travel-news/eight-kiwis-detained-at-us-border-since-november-mfat-reminds-travellers-of-entry-rules-amid-safetravel-review/BUP6FRREGJE33FEV4IJ334VSVQ/>,
and the police-state-type actions show no signs of letting up.

You may want to give that part of the world a miss. Stick to more
civilized parts, inhabited by more freedom-loving, democratic, less
doctrinaire societies. Leave the uncouth thugs to play their own
    dominance games amongst themselves.

For perspective though, USA border control has always been strict and
surly. I traveled to the USA from NZ in the late 80s on multiple
occasions and ended up being offered a transfer there for 4 years by
the USA-based company I worked for. I lived and worked under a USA
Business visa. Crossing the border into the USA (which I did over 20
times between 1986 and 1992) was always an unpleasant experience and
vastly different to the friendliness of NZ Customs and Immigration.

It is worth remembering that for international travel, the destination
country is notified of every passenger boarding every flight. So
while in the air everyone can be checked out prior to arrival by all
countries involved. If, for any reason, you arrive at the USA border
(in particular) with no prior notification you are on that flight you
can expect to be refused entry and if so your airline is responsible
for getting you back to your home country (IATA rules IIRC). This
applies worldwide for the most part. This is the reason most airlines
flying international routes will only allow one-way fares if you can
prove you are immigrating to the destination country.

It does look like things are getting even worse now in respect of the
USA. I can think of no good reason to go there, just as I don't go to
Bali because of the risk of being involved as an unwitting drug mule.
It is worth noting that the USA does not recognise transit passengers
    - if you land at a USA airport you must go through USA border control
even if you are just getting back on the same plane for an onward
flight - think flying Auckland to London via LAX for example). So not
only should you avoid traveling to the USA, also avoid traveling
    through the USA.

I too experienced that on many occasions when entering the USA. There was one exception where the immigration official (a probable grandfather) asked to see the passport for the teddy bear of one of my children - a rare but welcome exception particularly because I had sternly warned the kids to be respectful. My kids remind me of that from time to time. NZ officials are always welcoming, I have often received a welcome home comment.
