A lot of New Zealanders are voting with their spending - after all, it
makes sense . . .
Who writes this waste of time drivel, and who pays them to do it? It's
just more humbug contrived to promote the appeasement of the climate
hustlers.
Our charges for using roads are not yet fair - we do not charge more
for passenger vehicles that are heavier, and do not charge enough for
heavy trucks and buses, and that includes some electric vehicles. That
can easily be done through variable Road User Charges - we are
generally believed to be undercharging the very heaviest vehicles; the >previous current government have both missed that issue - the previous >government had no real excuse but the current government is determined
to continue subsidies to political donors - and that means rail gets
anywhere near the support that roads get: >https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckland-to-hamilton-train-how-does-te-huias-subsidy-compare-to-roads/QF57GIZW6VAD7HSOP7GWJ3SK4A/
Trains are a fantastic idea if the only alternative transport is a
horse drawn carriage, but in the modern world they are a 19th century
solution to a 21st century problem. The only thing trains are good for
now is hauling bulk raw materials over long distances. Passenger and
commuter trains are an economic black hole that just sucks in money,
and I've never understood why politicians are so obsessed with them.
"RNZ even found a passenger who takes it most days."
Wow! They found one! How long did that take?
ACT pretend they want to get people paying the correct charges for
services provided, but properly charging road users (and providing
equivalent support for rail) is just one step too far for them - I
doubt even the Taxpayer Union would query such a major source of
political donations . . .
No country can survive without roads. Trains, not so much.
Bill.
