  • another slrn oddity

    I have transferred my news reading from the openbsd machine to a debian
    11 laptop to save some power, as I am using the same hostname I have
    just copied over my config files, all seemed ok till I ran slrn and got
    this dialog:
    Reading startup file /etc/news/slrn.rc.
    Reading startup file /home/martin/.slrnrc.
    Using newsrc file /home/martin/.jnewsrc for server news.rakupottery.org.uk. Connecting to host news.rakupottery.org.uk ...
    Connected to host. Posting ok.
    Checking for new groups ...
    10 new newsgroup(s) found.
    Checking news ...
    Group news.software.readers is bogus - dropping it.
    Group alt.comp.os.mac is bogus - dropping it.
    Group comp.sys.mac.apps is bogus - dropping it.
    Group comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc is bogus - dropping it.
    Group comp.sys.mac.hardware.storage is bogus - dropping it.
    Group comp.sys.mac.system is bogus - dropping it.
    Group free.uk.archaeology is bogus - dropping it.
    Group free.uk.astrology is bogus - dropping it.
    Group uk.adverts.computer.mac is bogus - dropping it.
    Group uk.comp.os.linux is bogus - dropping it.
    Group uk.comp.sys.mac is bogus - dropping it.
    Group uk.railway is bogus - dropping it.

    what have I done that is stupid, the config files are all ok or appear
    to be ok, any offers?

    Mayby starting with a fresh jnewsrc file, with starting slrn '−create'
    option ?

    Don't know if you also copied it from the openbsd .....

    I second Ivan's opinion on recreating your .jnewsrc file. If you take
    a look at the file, it's pretty simple and just lists read article
    numbers. I wonder if article numbering changed at some point on the
    server you're connecting to which is why slrn is getting
    confused.

    Copy your old .jnewsrc file just so you can try to port over your subscriptions. The file itself is very simple to understand, so you
    should be able to massage it by hand to port your subscriptions.
