    Sounds like an Unicode problem.

    The code point U+2019 "RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK" is encoded as
    three octets in UTF-8 representation (this would explain your three
    question marks).

    Test:
    U+0027: '
    U+2019: ’

    If this really is the problem, then you should check your locale setup.
    The command "locale" should display the current settings.

    Perhaps it would be helpful, additionally to play with the
    "charset" configuration command (and set it--e. g. for "display"
    --to "utf-8").

    Is it the difference between ' and ’?

    If so, your character set, LANG setting, or font are the issue.
