• Usenet Archiver

From Jason Evans@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 13 11:27:49 2025
    Project: https://github.com/tgeek77/usenet_archiver

Usenet Archiver connects to Usenet servers, authenticates, and
    archives articles from a newsgroup into a `.mbox` file. It’s a
simple CLI tool supporting plaintext and SSL connections.

More details are on the Github page.

    ### Why?

Internet Archive’s Usenet data stops ~2013 with many gaps. This
tool helps create updated archives for archivists, historians,
    and data hoarders like me.

    ### Notice

Use ONLY with paid Usenet subs, not free ones like Eternal
September or AIOE. Bans are your fault. Check reddit.com/r/
usenet for paid providers—cheap block accounts available.

    **Don’t abuse free services!**

What do you have against Eternal-September, which has aggressive
    anti-spam measures?

E-S doesn't like that people now poll ten thousands of articles, as
this consumes many resources. The commercial servers also provide
binaries and are meant to be used to download gigabytes of articles.

    Thanks

I love E-S and trying to do an unofficial archive from them will 1. Get
you banned. 2. Waste their bandwidth.

The commercial providers sell access by the terrabyte. Archiving text-
based usenet articles isn't going to be drop in the bucket for them.

Hasn't it been dead a few times already and the came back up a few months later. There are other free volunteer usenet servers out there. I think my suggestion still stands about not wasting their bandwidth.

Hi Jason-and-All: Wondering if your tool would include those many Clari.net groups? When I was on Giganews, they had Clari from 2003-2012. Easynews has nearly the same. Wondering if there are places of finding comprehensive Clari in early 90s? Thanks in advance

`Wow Billy, thank you for an unexpected surprise. You say they are filling up? Are their new wire copy stories, or just any1 can post? I just examined 1 group, saw something like 436pages of items back to 1994. Are their ways I can grab these as mbox so I can display in Alpine like mail messages? Thanks so much in advance.

Thank you Billy: I am certainly enjoying these Clari items. While so-far several groups have batches of articles 1994-97 then they jump to 2003. I did find clari.news.tv which had 1990-91 articles. Last week when you said they were filling up, did you mean these archives will slowly find older stories? Thanks once again for a gold mine.

That was all from the usenet server. Imported to the web here: https://i2pn2.pugleaf.net/search?searchType=groups&q=clari

    No more to find.
Maybe there is more on archive.org but I don't think so.
Got most of it from there.

See Header Path where article came from (.. mbox.zip ...) .

If anyone can fill the gaps say: here!
