    Now I changed this entry in about half a dozen ways and it always comes
    back to the same error, so I think despite it being triggered by the newsfeeds entry that's not the cause.
    Anyone got a hint where I should have a look at?

    inncheck -vvvv -pedantic newsfeeds

    and post the output of the command.

    You do have an (uncommented) innfeed! feed like
    | # innfeed funnel master.
    | innfeed!\
    | :!*\
    | :Tc,Wnm*:/usr/lib/news/bin/innfeed
    in your newsfeeds file?
