  • Is Leafnode still possible?

    Last weekend I tried setting up a VM to provide cached Usenet articles using Leafnode. I set it up to work with two servers: Eternal-September and the
    paid service I use, Usenetnow. I have no problem logging into either
    service on port 119 or 563 from my PC. I set up Leafnode to use the
    standard unencrypted port 119 for compatibility reasons
    in /etc/news/leafnode/config (using Debian 12). However, the result was
    that Eternal-September refused to let me log in and Usenetnow worked, but incredibly slowly; something like 1 article per second when trying to cache news.groups.

    Now, I have a fast internet connection and I don't technically *need*
    Leafnode but I wanted to find a new way to store news articles for my
    archives.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    articles from E-S, which got both your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
    blacklisted in the firewall.

    I'm sure this is the case. The fact that I am posting this article now is
    proof that I'm not banned for life and I won't try that again with E-T.

    What I'm surprised about though is that this weirdness is happening with a
    paid account. It's no secret that most big paid providers don't care at all about "classic Usenet" they are providing access to filesharing under the
    guise of Usenet and yet if I try to cache text articles from them, it's rate-limited like crazy. However, if I were to try to download a 2GB movie file, it would be completely OK.

    And that's why I have my slrnpull config set up to only download like 20 messages at a time :D
