It is true that Can-Spam specifically exempts political mail. And it is
true that the FEC has accepted Google's proposal to allow campaign email.
However, I don't think it's true at all that it will be a good thing for
the Republican party. I think that this, like autodialers, are as apt to
turn off voters as to appeal to them. And I also think that in the past
the Republicans have totally misunderstood the internet while the Democrats have been better at taking advantage of it.
But most importantly, I think it will be difficult to make sure that they
are campaigning to people whom they can legally appeal to. I am already
tired of getting email spam for elections in Guatemala. Sending email spam
for American elections to Guatemalans is just as bad a plan.
