    What is the purpose of spreader axles on reefers and dry vans?

    Probably the most important single factor--they usually eliminate the
    annoying "adjustment" nonsense and associated hammering on stuff,
    spraying contaminants like WD 40 around and getting you boots and jeans
    all wet and muddy.

    If you mean "spread axles" instead of "spreader axles" then it is because
    you can go 40,000 pounds of weight on spread axles (20,00 per axle) where tandems can only go up to 34,000 pounds of weight.

    But the spread axle trailers are harder to backup because you can't be sure
    on where the pivot point is going to be unless if you can dump the air in
    one of the axles.

    then it is because

    But you still cannot go more that 80,000 on the total weight of truck and trailer, right?

    It all depends on what the truck is licenced for. I've seen trucks with tandems licenced for 73,280 lbs (it's on the "Cab Card") and I've heard of trucks that pull spread axle trailers licenced for 85,000 lbs and when that truck gets pulled around back at scale houses they just have to go inside
    with their paperwork and prove they are legal at 85,000 lbs.

    And I've seen trucks that were licenced for different weights for different States and that is on the "Cab Card" too.
