    What we know

Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito
(Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). These mosquitoes bite during the day and night.

Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects.

There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.

    History of Zika
Zika virus was first discovered in 1947 and is named after the Zika Forest
in Uganda. In 1952, the first human cases of Zika were detected and since
then, outbreaks of Zika have been reported in tropical Africa, Southeast
Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Zika outbreaks have probably occurred in
many locations. Before 2007, at least 14 cases of Zika had been

documented, although other cases were likely to have occurred and were not reported. Because the symptoms of Zika are similar to those of many other diseases, many cases may not have been recognized.

    Key Facts

There is no current local transmission of Zika virus in the continental
United States, including Florida and Texas, which reported local
transmission of Zika virus by mosquitoes in 2016-17.

No Zika virus transmission by mosquitoes has ever been reported in Alaska
    and Hawaii.

In 2019, there have been no confirmed Zika virus disease cases reported
    from United States territories.

    Statistics and Maps

Prior to 2014, very few travel-associated cases of Zika virus disease were identified in the United States.

In 2015 and 2016, large outbreaks of Zika virus occurred in the Americas, resulting in an increase in travel-associated cases in US states,
widespread transmission in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and
limited local transmission in Florida and Texas.

In 2017, the number of reported Zika virus disease cases in the United
    States started to decline.

In 2018 and 2019, there have been no reports of Zika virus transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States.

In 2019, there have been no confirmed Zika virus disease cases reported
    from United States territories.

Um ....... hasn't been much Zika for years now.
An initial outbreak, then nothing (maybe 'herd
immunity', human and/or animal reservoirs ?).

Now there was a cluster of Lassa Fever in the
UK last week - a nasty disease. Maybe they
    might get some mileage there.

In any case, Omicron was mostly a bust - very
over-sold as a disaster - but not much in the
way of serious consequences like with alpha
or delta. This was the last chance for the
authoritarian crowd and now nobody listens
to anything they say. "Wolf" one too many
times. Even 'blue' states are rapidly
    rolling back restrictions now.

And Fauci may have to get a real job again -
China preferably. He can experiment on Uighers.
A variant that causes hideous boils would scare
the shit out of everybody, especially the young
and vain. Covid was more easily ignored because
    it didn't show.

    I'll get my Pfizer-Omicron booster
    next month, just in case.
