No doubt lightning connector is better than whatever they called the
previous long connector. But I also remember people complaining mightily about it being unnecessary and how all the accessories and cables they had were obsolete all of a sudden. They accused Apple of making the change just because they wanted to remove competition from the market and force people
    to buy Apple branded accessories.

OK. So what? People accused Apple of that, but you've just admitted it
    was "no doubt...better".

So you solution would have been... ...what?

Wait until USB-C came out.  They obviously knew about it.

But did they know exactly WHEN it would finally arrive?

Having said that though, when I end up upgrading from my 14 to something
else I will have to carry two charging cords to power up any accessories
like Airpods, just as my wife is now with her iPhone 15, iPad and Airpods.

Oh, no! You poor, poor man!

    Hi badgolferman,

I actually don't fault Apple (too much) for sticking with Lightning.
You're a reasonable person so I'll stay my rationale on this here...

I've heard the argument from the Apple trolls, specifically nospam, that *everything* Apple chooses to do that's "different", is, to them, better.

An example is the lack of sd slots is "better" to the Apple trolls.
Likewise with the loss of the charger & aux jack is "better" to trolls.

Even the crappy batteries in the iPhone nospam would argue are "better"
because of the vaunted "efficiency" of the iPhone - which turned out to be
    a lie - but even so - a 1% efficiency can't overcome a 100% deficiency.

As for the "gorilla" glass or "tungsten" case or the "bold new colors"
being "better", my argument was the same as it was for face-id gimmicks.

A meaningless mktg gimmick being "better" is still a meaningless gimmick.
Now let's move on to the lightning specification.

Even the crappy RAM was "better" according to nospam due to "efficiency".
For years, I argued with nospam that the efficiency didn't exist.

We only learned on June 20th 2025 that I was right all along.
    Apple lied.

The "efficiency" Apple was talking about was bullshit they concocted from "internal tests" that nobody on the planet could ever reproduce.

    Apple lied.
    Pure and simple.

Then Apple concocted a bullshit excuse about their internal tests showing
an "A" in efficiency which nobody on the planet can reproduce.

So Apple, being deceitful as always, cast aspersions on the EU process even though they KNEW ABOUYT IT for years (as did all the OEMs know about it).

Apple, being as dishonest as is Trump, brazenly lied so obviously that only
a MAGA Apple troll wouldn't be able to see through Apple's excuses.

Of all the common OEMs, only Apple's phones sucked in efficiency to the
point that not a single iPhone model could possibly earn an "A" rating.

Everything I've ever said about Apple "efficiency" being a lie is true.
Now... with that in mind, let's get on to Lightning.

Apple apparently released lightning on September 12, 2012 on the iPhone 5.
At that time, the industry standard was micro USB Type-B on most devices.

USB-C specification was officially released in August 2014 and was
widespread on Android by around 2018-2019.

When Apple released the Lightning connector in September 2012, they were definitely aware of ongoing discussions and early development towards a
more advanced USB standard, which would eventually become USB-C. However,
the USB-C standard itself was not finalized until August 2014.

SO I can see why Apple deferred to switching immediately to USB-C.
However... at some point, Apple should have switched.

    They didn't.
I don't really fault them so much for that though.

It took force of law to make Apple care about its customer base.
In the end, it's even good for Apple because USB-C is everything now.

    Are you getting this, Quisling?

Stronger glass is just a "gimmick"...

...and the man who claims to only speak facts apparently doesn't know
that know Apple device ever game with a tungsten case (he meant titanium).

No. Apple did their tests in the same independent labs as everyone else.

    You said as much.

    You should try that.
