• Change Apple Mail or AOL settings for better threads?

From Connor Shannon@21:1/5 to All on Sat May 24 18:19:24 2025
Hi we have a group email and one lady uses AOL Mail and instead of her
replies starting with "Re" they start with "Reply" so her msgs don't get included in the thread with every body else's, its like she started a
    new thread.

Is there any setting I can change in Apple Mail to see a "Reply" msg the
same as a "Re" msg? Or does any body know of a setting in AOL Mail that
we can ask her to change? Email is supposed to use "Re" right?? Thank you.

    In fact "Re:".
AOL is 25 years up the road. No idea.

Can't she change the "Reply" to "Re:" at least manually?

Email is supposed to include an "In-Reply-To:" header that should be used
to build the thread tree. The subject-line should not be necessary for threading.

I have no idea though if AOL or AppleMail messes that up for you.

I have seen people doing all sorts of weird things, so it might be that
the person is creating a new message with a manually typed subject
(perhaps pasting in any previous text) or manually editing the subject
    after clicking the 'Reply' button.

You are right but if I get things correctly AOL is a webbased service
from a very distant past. I simply doubt that she can access the source
code. Perhaps there is a setting where she can make changes to the reply-function. Who really knows?

Correct. I have correspondents in other countries with different prefixes
for "Re:" yet the emails thread just fine.

I have no idea though if AOL or AppleMail messes that up for you.

It could be Apple Mail. I have one person who uses Apple Mail and their responses always come as an attachment and often not in the thread.

    Nope.

The "Reply-To" header contains the email address to which any reply to
that email should be sent. One of my current annoyances is that Telus
(my email ISP) contracted with Google to provide my email servces and
Google refuses to let me set my "Reply-To" to the email I want to use
    going forward.

The "In-Reply-To" header IS optional (but "should" be used), but its
purpose is to reference the "Message-ID" (also optional but "should" be
used) of the email to which the email is a... ...reply.

My mother is one of the original AOL members and refuses to change
accounts. Her replies to my Gmail account are threaded and remain part of
    the conversation, not separate emails.

I suspect your AOL user is creating a new message when replying.

Haha about your mom I think this lady is like that she doesn't want to
move to something more modern than AOL!

But I don't think she's making a new msg b'cuz the rest of the subject
line is the same as our original message and also our original msg is at
    the bottom of her reply.

    the "Reply-To" header.

Hmmm I just looked at a bunch of msgs from that lady and some other
friends and none of them had a Reply-To line. The only ones that did
    were from companies.

    You're not looking for a "Reply-To" line.

That header is only needed if the sender wants to have you "Reply" "To"
a different email address than the one the email has in the "From" header.

The header that links a reply to previous emails and makes a thread is "In-Reply-To" and it contains the "Message-ID" of the message to which
    that email is a reply.

Hi we have a group email and one lady uses AOL Mail and instead of
her replies starting with "Re" they start with "Reply" so her msgs
don't get included in the thread with every body else's, its like she
    started a new thread.

Is there any setting I can change in Apple Mail to see a "Reply" msg
the same as a "Re" msg? Or does any body know of a setting in AOL
Mail that we can ask her to change? Email is supposed to use "Re"
    right?? Thank you.

Email is supposed to include an "In-Reply-To:" headeri

You're thinking of the "Reply-To" header.

that should be used to build the thread tree. The subject-line should
    not be necessary for threading.

I have no idea though if AOL or AppleMail messes that up for you.

The way to tell is easy enough: Highlight (view) the message in Apple
Mail, choose View > Message > All Headers (or Raw Source), and look for
    the "Reply-To" header.

No she is not typing anything she's just clicking Reply. The rest of the subject line is fine its just the "Reply:" instead of "Re:" that's
    different.

Tell her to use Apple Mail with her AOL-Account:

Apple Mail, Thunderbird or any other standard mail client should work.

That's a good point I don't know if she's using AOL on the web or some Windows email program. I'll ask her.

I asked her and she's using a web browser. I suggested she try Outlook
or something like that b'cuz she says sometimes she's frustrated with
her email so a real email program would be better but I don't know if
she'll do that. Anyway thank you every body for the ideas I guess if she doesn't want to change the subject line by herself we'll just have to
live with her msgs not being with every body else's. Annoying but not
    the end of the world!
