• Undeleting an app?

From Cameo@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jan 24 17:48:31 2025
A banking app started misbehaving and I thought it got corrupted. So I
figured I would delete it and reload a new copy from the App Store. To my surprise the app was no longer there. Now I wish I could at least reload
the deleted one, if there was a way. Is there?

If it was a free app, I would think you should be able to get the IPA from someone else (in your family perhaps?) who has installed the same app.

If nobody installed it from your family, you might find a friend who has
had the same app installed so that you can get the IPA emailed from them.

You can also check the Internet archives for IPA files and just download
from any of those archives (after checking with VirusTotal first perhaps).

Also the app wasn't deleted from your cloud account so it should still be
there forever unless you ran out of free cloud space.

If you've set up a sync with your PC you also should have a copy there too. Worst case an IPA extractor can be run on your system to archive them now.

Contact the bank and ask them whether the app is still authorized, in
use, and where to obtain it.

But what about apps that you didn't have to purchase, like a bank app?

Why would an app you did not purchase need to be in your purchase history?

It is really that hard to imagine that "purchase" in this context means
"you downloaded it from the App Store and installed it on a device"?

If the app is no longer in the App store, there is probably a good
reason for that - like that it is obsolete. That's probably why you
think it is corrupt. I would contact the bank and ask them why the app
is unavailable and if it has been replaced by something new. I wouldn't
waste any time trying to resurrect an app that is no longer available.

It's not that it would necessarily be difficult - it's more that a
legitimate banking app would probably not be deleted from the App store
unless it's actually obsolete. And it's too much of a coincidence that
the app would stop working and also now be unavailable. Much simpler
and a better use of time to just contact the bank and find out from them
    what happened to the app.

+1; using a perhaps corrupted app is not very clever in the context of

Most likely explanation is that you were signed in with a different
Apple ID. In another post you mentioned being in Hungary and it is a US
banking app. It's possible that when you originally downloaded the app
you used a US Apple ID, but are now using a Hungary Apple ID. An app
made for a US company may well be regionalised and not show up in the
App Stores of other countries. The iPhone probably keeps track of apps installed using any Apple ID so that it can check for app updates.

Are you sure that Apple ties your apps to a unique Apple ID?

    Why would it do that?

On Linux or Windows or Android, the app isn't tied to the ID.

Why would an app that isn't purchased be tied to an ID only by Apple?

What is Apple doing wrong here that nobody else would think of doing?

The problem appears to be caused by the way Apple ties every app to your
unique Apple ID when nobody else would do something that sneaky but Apple.

That's why only in Apple's tracking database, even a free app has to be "purchased" (so that Apple can track every single time you invoke the app).

When Apple uses the word "Purchase" for an app, it means Apple ties it to a unique ID which only Apple does (so that they can sell your use to others).

If the app is no longer in the App store, there is probably a good
reason for that - like that it is obsolete. That's probably why you >>>> think it is corrupt. I would contact the bank and ask them why the
app is unavailable and if it has been replaced by something new. I
wouldn't waste any time trying to resurrect an app that is no longer
    available.

I did, or rather I tried, but all I got some AI service rep who just
tried to send me to a human rep, who then wanted to start the questions
all over again. Those damn keys are too small for my fingers and I was
in no mood to start it all over again. So I told the rep to red the
thread before I start answering. Then she just disappeared on me.
Next time I will try to get some live rep on the phone.

You could also just go to the App Store and do a search on the bank name
and see if you can find another app for that bank. Also - go to the
bank's website and see if you cab find a link for a mobile app or maybe
search on the webpage for "mobile app" or something similar.

The problem appears to be caused by the way Apple ties every app to your unique Apple ID when nobody else would do something that sneaky but Apple.

    Arlen, you are an idiot.

Why not just extract the app from someone elses phone and have them give it >>> to you so you can install it on your phone? Why would that be difficult?

It is not that easy to find some other iPhone users in Hungary who bank
with the BECU bank from US.

I just tried to install the app from the UK and it is not available.
Probably the same issue in Hungary.

Looks like you're a victim of geofencing.

Geofencing in the EU is illegal.
Shit! I forgot: The UK exited Europe.

Depending on why it was removed from the App Store, you may still be
able to re-download it from your list of past app purchases. See the
instructions on Apple's Support website: <https://support.apple.com/en-
    us/102417>

The "Not on this device" did it! It listed the BECU app and it seems
    to work it first glance.
Thanks for that tip that I ws not aware before, though I still wonder
why the app did not show up at the usual app list as the other apps are.

Most likely explanation is that you were signed in with a different
Apple ID. In another post you mentioned being in Hungary and it is a US banking app.

As I mentioned, I used the Android version of the app in the US. Than,
after moving to Hungary, I bought an iPhone Pro Max and used the official Android-to Apple conversion app that also installed the iOS version that at first execution asked me to refresh it from the AppStore and from then on
the app worked just fine till recently. So, I the AppleID was the same.
