Qualcomm kills its copy of Apple’s satellite SOS after ten months

Android manufacturers all said "no thanks" to Qualcomm's first swing at
    the idea.

One of the iPhone 14's major new features was "Emergency SOS via
satellite." During normal usage, smartphones struggle to connect to
something as far away as a satellite, but it's possible to send out tiny
bits of data under ideal conditions with the help of an aiming app.
Apple turned this into a way to send a message to emergency services
even when you're off the grid, and the Android ecosystem immediately set
about copying the feature. Qualcomm's "Snapdragon Satellite" was
announced in January 2023, and now, ten months later and with zero
    customers, the plan is dead.

Qualcomm's satellite partner for the project, Iridium, announced the dissolution of the partnership in a press release, though Qualcomm says
it still wants to work with Iridium for future projects. Iridium wrote:

"Iridium previously announced that it entered into agreements with
Qualcomm to enable satellite messaging and emergency services in
smartphones powered by Snapdragon Mobile Platforms using Iridium's

Well, you do need to x-post it for real response.

I really don't. You saw Arlen's immediate response, and no doubt his
little gang-of-trolls minions are watching and learning from it.

Arlen claims the troll gang "doesn't care" about failures like this, but
they regularly care when they find something Apple does that they can
gloat about, like this recent thread started by "Wally" (Arlen):

POLL: What do you predict Apple will do now that their iPhone 15 design incompetence is at the fore? <https://groups.google.com/g/misc.phone.mobile.iphone/c/C7fNdxLAfc8>

So, no. There's no need to cross-post since the Apple-hating troll gang
is right here in the Apple news groups. And I couldn't give less of a
shit what advocacy or Android groups think about it. Anyone who
cross-posts to Android and advocacy groups can sit their ass on a pole
and spin for all I care. They only attract more trolls and disruption by
    doing so.

I suspect that the Qualcomm (and other co. cases) required someone to
foot some heavy comms bills to get the comm side going.

In the Apple case, in order to "prime the pump" that heavy tab is being picked up by Apple in the first couple years. I expect Apple will be
adding a fee structure of some kind at some point for those who expect
to be in situations where such comms might be a life saver.

Speaking of which, Apple just announced they are extending Emergency SOS
via satellite another year, which should *really* chap the troll gang's
asses - you love to see it:

Since its launch a year ago, this groundbreaking service has made a
    significant impact around the world

One year ago today, Apple’s groundbreaking safety service Emergency SOS
via satellite became available on all iPhone 14 models in the U.S. and
Canada. Now also available on the iPhone 15 lineup in 16 countries and
regions, this innovative technology — which enables users to text with emergency services while outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage — has
already made a significant impact, contributing to many lives being
saved. Apple today announced it is extending free access to Emergency
SOS via satellite for an additional year for existing iPhone 14 users.1

I will agree with anyone who presents an adult logical sensible opinion.

The article I had read, prior to Jolly Roger's taunting post, said as much.
In addition, there's a stated desire for "standards", so it said.
I haven't read it since then though as I didn't think much of it then.

In the Apple case, in order to "prime the pump" that heavy tab is being picked up by Apple in the first couple years. I expect Apple will be

Yes. The article I had read stated that Apple was footing the bill.
It could be Apple Marketing was well aware of the resistance to expense.

Personally, if I go on a real deep "away", I'd get a PLB or Sat
messenger and not depend on the narrow use case of a phone that will
likely be completely discharged after 2 or 3 days.

A typical smartphone is so fragile as to be nearly useless in terms of
being an emergency device in conditions that we'd consider dangerous.

OTOH, transiting some back roads here there is 0 cell coverage, so the
    iPhone option looks very good.

At the time this first came out, I didn't think much of it since anyone
really going into harms way would not trust the fragility of a cellphone.

For the freak emergency though, Apple Marketing could leverage the noise on
how it saves lives much like Apple marketing does today with their watch.

As "robust" emergency technology - I doubt the smartphone is the correct
item to trust simply given how incredibly fragile it is under hard weather.

For my response to Jolly Roger, I'll actually bother to look at his article (but for your response, I gave you my gut feeling without having done so).

    Hi Jolly Roger,

This is an adult conversation, so likely you won't understand a word of it.

You posted something nobody on the Android newsgroup cares about, since we already knew about it and didn't feel any need to inform anyone of nothing.

What _I_ responded to was the obvious desperation that you have to "taunt" given that you "feel" superior that Apple succeeded and Qualcomm failed.

I'll agree with you that Apple succeeded with this silly marketing gimmick. Qualcomm failed.

Arlen claims the troll gang "doesn't care" about failures like this, but
they regularly care when they find something Apple does that they can
gloat about, like this recent thread started by "Wally".

I've always said you provide value to me, Jolly Roger, because you don't
have the capacity to lie like nospam does, nor are you like Alan Browne.

You provide value to me because I learn deeply about how you people think.
You posted that article to "taunt" us which is why it's interesting you
    did.

We knew all about it, Jolly Roger. And we didn't care.
It's just a marketing gimmick, Jolly Roger.
Like glass backs, titanium frames, and "**YELLOW*!!!!!!!!!!!" iPhones!

But what _I_ care about is understanding how your strange mind works.
The taunt shows me how insecure you feel about Apple's design incompetence.

It's obvious that Apple is incompetent at chip design from the billions
poured into 5G modem designs to the unpatchable holes in the secure enclave
and CPU SOCs to the failed Apple GPU SOC, and to recent iPhone 15 flaws.

If your claim is that Qualcomm is similarly incompetent, which is the claim you're _clearly_ so desperate to make, then why is it well ahead of Apple?

In the Apple case, in order to "prime the pump" that heavy tab is being
picked up by Apple in the first couple years. I expect Apple will be

    Jolly Roger,

You are incapable of understanding a mere marketing gimmick, perhaps due to
the fact you have never taken even a single marketing class on the subject.

It's a gimmick, Jolly Roger. A meaningless gimmick just like the YELLOW!
iPhone is a meaningless gimmick. Just as FaceID is a meaningless gimmick.

Apple preys on people who are scared to death.
This is a _perfect_ gimmick for the typical Apple consumer, Jolly Roger.

An Android consumer, by definition, doesn't fall prey to the predatory marketing that Apple spends more than they spend on R&D promoting to us.

The fact Qualcomm backed out of their business decision to promote this marketing gimmick to compete with Apple's marketing gimmick was already
known to me, Jolly Roger, _before_ you posted your taunting thread.

There's nothing in your article reference that is news to me, because I
didnt' care about the marketing gimmick when Apple did it - let alone when Qualcomm said they'd implement their own marketing gimmick to compete.

That Qualcomm failed is of no consequence to me, Jolly Roger.
Your attempt to make it important belies your insecurities - not mine.

What I am asking you about is _why_ you think I should care that Qualcomm proposed a marketing gimmick - which (rather predictably) failed on them.

Why exactly, Jolly Roger, do you feel I'm supposed to care about that?

It's a simple _adult_ question, Jolly Roger:

    QUESTION:
Since both Apple & Qualcomm failed at getting anyone to _pay_ for it,
why do you think we should care that a mere gimmick is failing both?

Do you know why that simple question makes you pitifully scared, JR?
    I do.
