• Air Tags algorithm changed?

From Alan Browne@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 23 09:17:32 2023
In a recent other post the notion of what happens when you travel with
someone else who has a tag. Do you get alerted to their tag being with you?

I've done this many times, notably with my SO who has a Tag in her purse
and car. And she's traveled in my car as well with my tags.

Never had either of use been alerted about the tag of the other.

Went out for dinner last night, about a 10 minute drive - a couple hours
at dinner with friends and back home. When I got home I was alerted to
    "AirTag detected near you".

So I wonder if Apple have tinkered with the algo of late, perhaps iOS
    16.3.1.

IME, you are only alerted if the owner of the AirTag is not nearby (or
if you have turned off notifications for that AirTag), which makes
    sense from a anti-stalking perspective.

Indeed it does - and that was in my reply to Chris yesterday - so I was startled to see this occur yesterday. We've had the tags for nearly 2
years now and never seen this occur. Change in algo? Anomaly? TBD.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this for the next while.

I could try that - borrow her car for a drive. Rarely do that though.

Or simply take her purse tag with me.

I'm sure what you saw the other day was just a glitch.

We have one in our car, and on occasion when we go out and get in the
car, we'll hear it beep a few times, then stop. I suspect it simply
takes a moment for it to realize its owner is nearby.

So I did have something similar recently. The original battery died and
after I changed it, the Airtag kept beeping at me. I also got occasional
    airtag notifications.

Turns out it had lost connection with my phone despite still being able to
see it in Find My. The only way to get it reconnect was by resetting my
    network settings on the phone.

It took me a while to work it out because the detected AirTag notification doesn't mention the device name so I didn't know it was my own one that was "following" me.

Hmm. That is strange. Next time (if it happens) don't reset the
network settings, try signing out of AppleID and back in again (this
    might be more tedious actually).

    Likewise.

Note that to "unpair" an airtag you can install the battery, take it out
    - repeat 5 times.

So it's possible that in fumbling the install of the batt that you inadvertently de-pair it.

Hmm - I may have jumped the gun on that.

The owner still has to Unpair it from his AppleID first. But if he did
so outside of Bluetooth range to the Tag then the Tag might not have
    gotten the memo.

See my other reply to JR - I was incomplete in the functionality of the
"5 cycle" reset. It also requires a deliberate de-linking of the device
    from the AppleID.
