312 miles can be a couple of different things.

Since I never use "miles" I never noticed this. Just tried it and
indeed I get an underline and km.

If I enter "200 km to go" --- there is no conversion to miles offered
... it "knows" Canada is metric (in most things).

Tried: "14 pounds of rye" and got:

    14 £ --> CAD dollars

as well as Kg and grams.

    -

I'll be more vigilant for 'underlined' portions of messages.

On the phone since messages between two Apple devices would be encrypted end-to-end and Apple's servers cannot decrypt the message.

Such conversions are trivial to implement - though the phone would have
to access some conversion rates (like currency) in real-ish time from
web or other sources. This can be done anonymously in a variety of ways
    such as anonymous IP's.

    Congrats on your promotion.

    Not likely.

On reading your post I sent a few text messages to my SO's iPhone.

It is iOS 15 (as it is an iPhone 7 and can't be updated to 16).

So I send it from iOS 16 - and on that phone the conversion(s) are offered.
On her phone they are not.

    On her iPad they _are_.

OTOH, if I send "Try 32 miles" from her phone to mine, then the
conversion appears on my phone, but not (of course) hers.

Nor does it appear on my Watch or my iMac (Messages) or her MBA.

(My iMac is a few years back in OS level).

I'll update her MBA to the current level (13.2.1) sometime this week to
see if we get the conversion option there... (She's at 12.x).

So this seems to be an Apple thing and only on the latest v. of iOS and
Pad OS. (Not sure about Mac OS yet).

It's obviously Apple's Data Detectors at work, and they have been part
of Apple's operating systems since Mac OS 8 or so, IIRC. Apple patented
the technology way back in 1996. Later, both Samsung and Google stole it
which is documented in court records.

Already answered that. Try to pay attention.

    This was a SMS message.

The conversion almost certainly happened on your phone.

Just as when I send a message from my SO's iPhone (which doesn't support

I've used them for years and have nothing bad to say about them. It's relatively cheap and reliable, and the support is pretty good. The only
caveat I can think of it that they don't carry binary newsgroups. So, if
you're looking for binaries, you'll have to look elsewhere. I've never
been very interested in using Usenet for binaries, personally.

I pay with credit card through PayPal and the conversion is automatic.
    It's never been a problem.

I haven't tried using port 80. I used port 119 with slrn and 563 with
    Usenapp.

I had used a bunch of different free services through the years,
including ones provided by various internet service providers I used.
Most of them were unreliable, slow, or had other issues. I recall spam
being particularly bad with some of them. When my then-current ISP
announced they were shutting down their news service, I started
researching paid services. Individual was recommended by a few people
in different places on the net (including some folks here, IIRC), and
after reading their policies and FAQs, I decided to give them ago. And
    I've never looked back.

Recently on the nntp newsgroups there has been ample discussion of a
variety of news server nntp admins who have chosen in recent months to shut down because the spammers forced them to implement Draconian controls.

    When my then-current ISP
announced they were shutting down their news service, I started

Yeah. On the nntp newsgroups there has been a discussion of how Cuomo in particular, worked with AT&T (in particular) to shut down their nntp feeds.

I wonder if anyone here realizes that was nothing more than a political
stunt for the sex-offending Cuomo and a business shunt for profitless AT&T.

My only problem with a service like individual is that it's a pain to pay
for anything without having to do extra work to protect your privacy.

Hmm. So badgolferman asks a question. In the best traditions of

I was commenting on buying her a new phone. The yellow one is the
newest -- thus "Why don't you buy her a new yellow iPhone 14?"

Why hasn't nospam yet claimed yellow is "Not needed" because "Nobody
wants it" is the real question that needs to be answered. LOL

My god, you guys really need new material. How embarrassing for you.

    Still triggered, huh?

    And you are not ?

Hmm. So badgolferman asks a question. In the best traditions of
usenet camaraderie I do some quick tests and was happy to do so - and
report them. Noting my SO's iPhone is getting a bit old.

His response is "Why don't you buy her a new yellow iPhone 14?"

Which is pretty lame trolling. If anything (other) Alan was quite
generous in labeling it only "triggered".

I'd sure accept a free yellow iPhone.

Except that all iPhone 14s are the SAME.

Remember, it's Apple who thinks color is what makes its customers buy it.

Ah, but will that yellow iPhone 14 come with a free yellow USB-C cable too?
