Slate Auto: Inside the EV startup, stealth production facility backed
    by Jeff Bezos

In a nondescript supplier park in suburban Detroit, an electric
    vehicle startup backed by Amazon

founder Jeff Bezos is building what it hopes will be America's newest automaker.

The facility is filled with dozens of prototypes, crash-tested
vehicles, a crude lab vehicle skeleton adorned with wires and, most importantly, a busy "beta" assembly line that has been building
electric vehicles since December for the startup, Slate Auto.

I hope it works out well for them. The US really needs a small basic
truck like this. It's being advertised as all electric, but basic with
manual roll up windows and no radio.

I hate to say, but if they made a 4 cylinder 5 speed version, I bet it
would fly off the showroom floors for the advertised $20k price tag.

Studies have shown most people drive a limited amount of daily miles.

"The typical daily miles driven by an average American is
approximately 37 miles. This translates to about 1,133 miles per month
and 13,596 miles per year, according to the Federal Highway
    Administration"

EVs can deal with local drivers, just fine. In small town America,
it's not prudent to drive one mile for a gasoline engine...too many
cold engine drives. Where I live, some use electric golf carts to get
around in the small city, some 13 miles from where I live.

I visited a great aunt and uncle a few years ago, they live in a golf
community in Florida. Most of the retirees there hardly drove at all,
there were golf carts everywhere in the street.

If I lived in a smallish city/town that allowed these types of
vehicles, I'd use a Gator/Cart vehicle for most local trips.

Can't drive on a state highway here which goes thru the town, but you
can cross it. For short distance driving, EV carts work just fine.
