The inclusion meant that the number one Chinese export to America by
value last year was exempted from the import taxes, alongside other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar
cells and memory cards.
Thinking about this, it's cynical and revealing. It means consumers will
think everything got better, because the price of a cellphone is
someting they are paying attention to. They're not focused on the price
of steel, chemicals, industrial imports, machinery, plastic products, manufactured parts ... all the things the Walmart-shopping consumer does
not pay attention to.
Stupid example: Easter. The baskets and fake grass came from China, the
plastic eggs came from China, probably a decent part of the candy and
chocolate came from China, the boxes that chocolate bunnies get
presented in: China. Every single one of those things just got more
expensive.
China can sit tight knowing America will be FORCED to concede on its
tariffs. It's going to impact every American consumer budget, the one
thing Americans do not like, especially if they're not bought into the
rhetoric of "suffering in the name of winning ... something."
When Trump caves, he's going to look like a LOSER and it's going to be hilarious to watch.
