• Why You Need A New Email Address

From JAB@21:1/5 to All on Sat Nov 16 19:42:35 2024
Google's ongoing campaign to narrow the security and privacy gap
between Android and iPhone, as well as the wider Google and Apple
ecosystems has just taken its latest twist. For 2 billion Gmail users,
this could completely change how you use email.

Apple's Hide My Email feature lets users keep their personal email
addresses private, away from the information brokers who sell lists of
email addresses and phone numbers that drive the global scourge of
    spam and cold calling.

Now it seems Google has decided to follow suit--a surprise decision
no-one saw coming and which was not touted with the other privacy and
security updates this year. Per Android Authority, "sure, Gmail is an
absolute champ at filtering out spam, but every time you share your
email with someone even a little bit shady, do you feel like you're
playing with fire and risking a whole bunch of unwanted contact?
Google may just have a solution in the works, at least by the looks of
    our latest teardown."

A very interesting link, thank you. As an Apple user I will
be making much more use of Apple's email cloaking in future,
especially on my more important Gmail addresses.

It appears that AIs will be battling each other in spam/scam
email; I find that rather scary.

I'd move away from free e-mail services altogether if I was you!

As my ol' Nan used to say... pay peanuts, get monkey's! (I'm
sure there's a more apt modern saying but it'll do for now!)

"Gmail is an absolute champ at filtering out spam"

An email program can access Gmail via SMTP. I did this years ago, and
messages can be left on their server, or they can be removed.

I have no complaints with Gmail's service. I use ad blockers on the
browser used, so I don't know if ads exist there these days.

Many years ago, I had a subscription service that had not figure out
    how to block spam.

I find it sad. The waste of resources annoy me. =(

When it comes to spam, it is a mystery to me. I get perhaps 3 or 4 per
year, and I never had a problem with it.

I understand that for some people the problem is huge, so I always wonder
what I did not to have that problem?

The only thing I can think of is:

    1. I have a "garbage" address at hotmail.com and by now it has around 20k
    spam messages in it.

    2. I never give out my real email address except to other businesses, and usually businesses have become much more respectful of customers/partners
email addresses the last couple of years.

I use disroot.org and infomaniak.com for my private email and neither has problem with spam.

I use Mailbox and have an alias for anything that is likely to
bring spam in, although I actually don't see any these days, so
their spam filtering is working okay. (Tesco 'news' go straight
to junk so I leave them there!) Plus, I don't give my 'personal'
e-mail address out willy-nilly, which also helps.

No service is 100% perfect, they all have pros and cons, but
anything that Google 'gives' you has a cost attached to it
    somewhere along the line.

Pobox is now part of Fastmail, but many years ago when Pobox was in
its infancy, I tried it...but the spam rolled in.

Spam filtering has improved greatly since then.

Gmail, if they offered a paid service, like they do for businesses, I
would consider coughing up some coins.

What I like and use in Gmail is their search engine. I've used it
over and over for various reasons.
