Brazil lifts ban on Musk's X after it pays $5m fine

Brazil's Supreme Court has said it is lifting a ban on the social
media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

In his decision, Justice Alexandre de Moraes said that he authorised
the "immediate return" of X's activities in the country after it paid
hefty fines and blocked accounts accused of spreading misinformation.

I wonder if he will reclaim the fine with some good, old fashioned
creative accounting? I received a fine once of 200 EUR, and I did creative accounting and reclaimed 1500 EUR from the government as a matter of
principle. So the fine led to a 1300 EUR loss for the government which
    pleased me enormously! =D

    That is
    stupid.

I mean how do we know. Besides people could have bypass the government
block by using 8.8.8.8 DNS or whatver

    What a waste of time.

Fired people for nothing at all.

Fact Check: Brazilians can be fined for using VPN to access X

Brazilians using VPN to access Elon Musk's social media platform X
following a ban on the platform in the country can be fined, as of
Sept. 6, contrary to posts online suggesting a Supreme Court order
imposing the fine was rolled back.

Brazils telecommunication regulator took down X on Aug. 30 after the
platform failed to name a legal representative in Brazil and ignored a
deadline to comply with court orders. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre
de Moraes ordered that people accessing X using VPNs can be fined up
to 50,000 reais ($8,943.74) per day.

    In the US:

"Fines and penalties a person owes to the government for violating
local, state, and federal laws are never deductible. The IRS typically
sends a notice to a person after a tax audit and assesses both
penalties and interest on any unpaid amounts."

People in Musk's financial stratosphere don't suffer losses, despite anything you may read to the contrary in the Wall Street Journal. He'll recoup his loss with some sort of tax break. After all, $5m is $5m.

I agree. That would seem to be the logical and obvious path of events to
    me.

I think this is largely nonsense. Brazil does not have the capability nor
the resources to track its users usage of foreign VPN services, so the
people that do want to use twitter can do so without too much trouble.

My opinion is that the main idea behind the law is lawfare to hunt down political opponents. Let's say they do, capture the phone and then find
out they have VPN software, they can add yet another fine or sentence to
    the list.

This is very typical in authoritarian countries. Weird laws that just
exist in order for the government to be able to hang the opposition at
    will.

Brazil is slowly but surely aligning themselves beautifully with russia,
iran, china, south africa and the other powers of darkness.

"Nonsense" laws have been around a long time in many countries.

Those in the higher echelons of government like the perks, and will
    oppose a change.
