  • Passenger train lines in the USA vs Europe

    Could it have something to do with the age and geography of the countries?
    The only train system in the world I have used, that worked so well that
    I'd happily ditch the plane or the car is japan.

    If europe imported the japanese trainsystem and made it work the same when
    it comes to reliability, I think air travel would drop with 50% at least.

    In US, the private sector was not making enough profits, so the
    government (Amtrak: quasi-public corporation) started in 1971.

    Europe's train systems are quite ok, they would finally need to start working together again properly. And get rid of some of the car-centrism.

    Although it seems it slowly is starting again, I heard a lot about new night train lines between countries lately.


    In sweden it is awful at all levels. Travelling in the subway can get you assaulted, robbed and killed in some areas.

    The USA can't efficiently make use of high speed passenger rail services without some major upgrades and fewer stops.

    For example if there was fast passenger rail service between larger
    cities, and destination continuation shuttles were reasonable and safe,
    more people would take trains. Many really hate flying these days.

    The stupid government wants rules that trains must have too many stops
    to serve communities that have no travelers. Why stop if nobody is
    getting on or off?
