Have to wait to gbet buried; Registering one's will.

A) A friend told me a story about his friend F, who died in Florida a
couple years ago. F had no will and no family nearby but did have a
friend G who was willing to pay for his funeral. However somehow they
learned of a niece, who would have been his heir.
Does this story make any sense? They would not take the money from G
while they were looking for the niece, and F lay in the funeral home
without burial for 2 months while they looked for her.
What would be the purpose of finding her? To get her direction about
what to do with his body? To get her to pay? Why should she have to
pay? If F had enough money to pay himself, is there no way to get, say,
a priority lien on his money, at least enough to pay for a modest
funeral? If one has $5000 cash in one's wallet when he dies, can't
the funeral home use that, or do they have to hunt for one's heir first?
What do you think really happened here, and is Florida worse than other
states?
B) Same friend tells me my will MUST be registered with the county. It's definitely not required by law in Baltimore County, but maybe there is
some overwhelming reason that it should/must be done. Finding my will
should be no problem since two friends know that it sits alone in a red
vinyl envelope on top of the top drawer of the file cabinet. (And some
changes are pending.)
I can't really discuss these things with the friend who's telling me
them. He's a great guy but he's doctrinaire and patronizing if I
disagree or even if I just don't understand.

I think you can tell, but just to be sure:
I am not a lawyer.
