  • Civil war gold ?

    (not sure if I've managed to get somehow barred from this group ?)

    Saw a story about the possible recovery of some gold from the (US !)
    civil war.

    Apart from any laws pertaining to the archaeology, am I naive to think
    there should be no question of provenance ? Surely this is government
    property and that is that ?

    The story is pretty thin on real information. A lot of that area is
    National Forest which means the US Government owns it.

    There might be an argument between the federal and Pennsylvania
    governments about who owns it. How long does it have to be abandoned
    before the state can escheat it?

    But unless the treasure hunters had a prior agreement with the Feds, it
    looks like they're out of luck.
