Every defendant has the option of a not guilty plea.
Obviously, he rejected their offer. And the $64 question is,
what did they offer? i.e. considering the facts of the case.
Then, what was his counsel's counsel? Perhaps they
told him he had slim chance, and he answered: I'm not
going into the slammer voluntarily, I'll roll the dice.
Or, did they encourage him, with the reasonable theory
that it's hard to convict a cop, there's the common
sympathy of "they have a tough job", and the defense
only needs one such juror.
All discussion of this topic is of course speculation.
But that's one of the functions of these boards, so
don't be shy -

Please usually reject plea deals for one of two reasons:
1) They believe or have been led to believe they have a reasonable chance
at a better outcome if they go to trial
2) They consider themselves innocent of the crimes they have been charged
with and refuse to take any plea deal as a matter of principle
In this case, until the defendant or his attorneys do some kind of tell-all interview, I don't think we have any real basis for speculation.
