Hearsay is the use in the courtroom during trial of the statement an out-of-court declarant to prove the truth of the matter stated therein. It is ordinarily prejudicial and objectionable, and the judge (unless he or she is a stupid sonofabitch) almost
invariably sustains an objection to hearsay. There are a few exceptions. I recently saw a textbook on evidence in which 100 pages were devoted to the hearsay rule.
